GoogleMaps for Motorola Q Released

February 6, 2007
By: Christopher Meinck

Google has released a Windows Mobile Smartphone version of their popular GoogleMaps.

GoogleMaps allows you to take the power of Google Maps with you on your Motorola Q. Features include:

  • Real-time traffic — See where the congestion is, and estimate delays in over 30 major US metropolitan areas.
  • Detailed directions — Whether you plan to walk or drive, your route is displayed on the map itself, together with step-by-step directions.
  • Integrated search results — Local business locations and contact information appear all in one place, integrated on your map.
  • Easily movable maps — Interactive maps let you zoom in or out, and move in all directions so you can orient yourself visually.
  • Satellite imagery — Get a bird's eye view of your desired location. (It's like you're there, we swear.)

The Windows Mobile 5.0 version of Google Maps for mobile is also GPS-enabled, allowing users whose mobile devices support GPS functionality to view their current location. Google Maps for mobile tells users where they are without requiring them to enter their location. The application automatically displays the user's current location on the map as a flashing blue dot, and factors in that location whenever users search for local businesses or request driving directions.

I actually didn't know this was a new product, but I got the link when I decided to try maps.google.com and it redirected me to the right place... I loaded the app, so far so good... I love the feature of pulling an address from your address book, and it filters to show only contacts that have an address built in... one thing I didnt like, but I dont know if its the app of the phone, that when I did the installation, I told it to install it on the Mini SD card, but it didnt.... no biggie... besides that is pretty amazing...

It's free to download and use. It does require you have a data plan with your wireless provider.

Will the Globalsat BT359W from your store work with this application? Would i need to purchase anything else to get the GPS feature working on the Q with google maps mobile?

I'm not able to install it. The files that are downloaded aren't executable as far as I can tell!

I agree with mr. Kayaker. Where's the .exe file or install file? Us NooBs need a little guidance. ;-)

From your MotoQ, open up Internet Explorer. In the address bar, type http://www.google.com/gmm

If I recall correctly, it'll ask if you want to install. That's it. Windows Mobile phones typically use .cab files and not .exe files.

How do I get the GPS function to work on Google Maps for Mobile. I've selected GPS for location on the Q (as opposed to 911) and then selected the GPS mode in Google Maps... said my GPS reciever wasn't working properly and gave a page of suggestions. tried it and got nowhere. Assuming that this just isn't compatible? Any info appreciated.

You need an external GPS in order to use the GPS function with GoogleMaps.

I thought the Q had GPS built in? So if there is an emergency your GPS doesn't work unless you have an external reciever? This can't be right. Anymore input?

Why? VZNavigator uses the internal GPS. It works great. Unfortunately, now that I have the Q, I have to buy a Bluetooth GPS as well? Something else to lose and yet another way to take advantage of the customer. Unbelievable.

Any hope of using the internal GPS in a future (or beta) release?

The Q says it has "GPS location" on. I take it this won't work with google maps. Is that correct? What do I need to buy to get it work. Any recommendation for a make and model. Do I need to buy CoPilot and use a whole new map system?
