My Moto q
written by albeartoe, May 09, 2007
Love the phone. Downloaded Papyrus and I like how that works. Don't know why the phone doesn't charge correctly from an outlet. Also the bluetooth is a little tricky. the text buttons are slippery because of the roundness.
My Moto Q

I thought this was a great phone but i have had problems with it, it was exchanged for a new one but still having problems with sync. I think the Moto people have to go back to the drawing board to make it better it has lots of faults. I am really not happy with my purchase, i should have stayed with my old phone.

My wife & I think these phones work great. Communication on updates could be better. Had one issue with syncing after system upgrade. Otherwise, love it.
Moto Q Opinion
written by Kenneth Scott, May 17, 2007
so far i ahve liked the moto q, however i do wish a clip or case would have been included.the bluetooth experience with my moto s9 headset is great the two work together seemlessly, i have no complaints for moto, just wish 3rd party developers would start making more media avalible. ohhh wait there is one problem i have come across... i am with sprint and have found out that my phone is equipped with gps, but i will have to purchase an external bluetooth gps reciever to use the 3rd party apps. such as telenav... what bugs me is i am told that the gps inside the q. is the exact same as the onein the razr v3, and it needs no external reciever.. this is my opinion but if anyone would like to enlighten me on this subject it would be greatly appreciated.. not to mention the ht820 headset...

Im totally unsatisfied considering that i did actually pay for my phone myself. (~$200-$250). the phone has random restarts, shut downs and glitches. i know glitches are expected for a smart phone, but this phone just doesnt make sense sometimes...no ambient light sensor, you cant ever turn off the light on the keyboard or dim the light on screen thru factory settings. everything you need to make this phone better is by downloading more crap on to it like candle light, google maps, etc.
Partially happy
written by Specialtye, May 22, 2007
I am about 70 percent happy with the Moto Q. I don't like the fact that its not compatible with all of Sprint's platforms, i.e. picture mail (although there is a work around for this), sprint vision, ring tones, etc. The phone will charge at times but will not at others even after charging all night. Even after the software update I still continue to receive the unable to make call error or I can be in a call and the phone indicates that I am not in a call and the only way to end the call is to shut the phone down. The battery life is horrible even if I kill all of the applications running and reduce my active sync from automatic to manually. I think that Motorola needs to work out some of the issues and send the phone out again and it would be nice if the phone had the updated version of windows mobile. Also with the PPC6700 I did not have to purchase Documents to Go as it was already installed on the phone but I had to spend $30 to install this on the Q.
Glitchy... frustrating
written by Dustin Gannon, May 24, 2007
Documentation that comes with the phone doesn't tell you that there is a limit to the size of memory card you can use. I bought a 4gb card only to find out later that it won't take more than 2gb. Phone has trouble remembering the memory card is even there. The REAL BIG problem is that the camera sucks. You have to hold the camera still for an additional 10 seconds after snapping the picture otherwise you don't get what actually freeze frames on the screen. DON'T be in a hurry to take pictures. I am a bit peeved that you hve to buy a whole bunch of additional software to optimize productivity on this phone! Changing the sync settings with your windows computer after the intial setup is a royal pain in the tusch! What do you expect from a "Windows" product. Very disappointed.
compatibility, memory, etc....
written by Lewis, May 26, 2007
Special: Q is compatible will everything you listed....I use all daily. If the aren't working, it might by your plan...just a thought.
Dustin: Page 28 of manual (the section on memory cards) says "up to 1G". I don't know how I saw that but I'm glad I did. You get a HUGE 'hell yeah' for your comment regarding Windows products. Sprint really missed the boat when the passed on the iPhone. I bet the iPhone's camera will satisfy that issue you mentioned ; )
USB charging is buggy
written by Niles, May 26, 2007
I can't charge Q with a USB adapter form my car's power outlet. I have frequent problem to charge it from my PC. The same PC, sametimes I can, more times I can't.

written by jareti, May 31, 2007
I too have had problems with the phone radomly sapping the extended battery power. I never know when it will last 4 hours vs 12 hours, you know i never expected to have to carry a power adapter around with me all the time. Another problem i had was with the Motorola H500 bluetooth headset... sometimes it sync'd and sometimes it didn't... Always had to say hello twice when answering calls really sucked. The people at Verizon have been very helpful in trying to address issues i've had... 2nd phone and 3 headsets i now have something that works about 70% of the time
( shame on Motorola.
Hate it
written by NotaQFan, June 04, 2007
I got my Q for free - $100 off, $100 rebate for re-subscribing with Verizon, $100 for signing up for unlimited data transfer ($50/month. Long since cancelled). I wish I paid for something decent instead. No touch screen. Software for other Windows Mobile device doesn't work. Sucks the Extended battery dry (my $65 "free" Q now doesn't fit in the standard holster). Virtually no free software. Camera sucks. I'm on my 3rd Q because the others shutdown at random or had other hardware problems. Organizing stored data between the built-in RAM and my mini-SD card is awkward at best. Shall I go on?
HATE IT. HATE IT. HATE IT.

On a rating out of 10(10 being best)I will give this smartphone a 7.5. I have more likes than dislikes. I really don't know the maximum potential of my phone and still learning about it. I got my Moto Q February 2007 and it died on me early July 2007. The techs could not figure out what was wrong with it. They gave me another one (not refurbished, she said) I find that I dislike the delay between pushing buttons and phone recognizing your selection. Buttons are slippery because of roundness. I do have to get use to the holding phone longer when taking pics. I enjoy the music sound quality and picture quality of video. Size is also a favorite of mines and good to know about not purchasing a 4gb mini sd.

My Q heats up and burns my face, and the memory has somehow disapeared. I use a 1gb card that is only have full and never use the base memory but it insist that it is full of memory. I will still give the Q an 7 out of 10. I will return it for testing in the morning. Thats why I am here to see if others share the same issues.

I'm still within the month period, and have been thinking about taking it back. What do you recommend in lieu of the Q? I have been very unhappy with the battery life and was told today at Sprint that the cover for the upgraded battery is unavailable. If I go back to a standard cell phone, which one should I get?

The thing about the Q is it's one of those phones for people who will utilize it's capabilities to thier extents.I use my Q for EVERYTHING.Word documents, pdf's, games, music, internet, you name it.I used to get new phones every other month, but with the Q I haven't gotten bored with it yet. And Iv never kept a phone for longer than a year.Although one thing I would love to see is more updates.

We have 11 users at work and the range of problems is wide; from random alerts we can't figure out, to random shutdowns - intermittent charging problems and calls that appear to be dialing that require you to take out the battery to get the phone to respond again.
Not all users have the same problems. My first one shut down on me all the time. The replacement now makes random sounds frequently, even though I have all alerts except incoming calls, emails, text messages, and new voicemail notifications turned off. Can't decide which is more aggravating. Battery/case design is very poor, considering how difficult it is to remove and how many times it has to be removed to get the phone to work. Several users also have problems with their Bluetooth headsets stsying paired...sometimes they do; sometimes they don't.

I have had nothing but problems with my Q! The first one lost it's flash and would hang at Motorola's flash bootloader screen. Now on my second Q and it's having connectivity problems. Sometimes I have to take the batter out and put it back in just to make a call or receive a text. Other times it will be off when I try to make a call.
I'm not happy at all! I'm going today to get yet another Q.

My Motorola Q just locked up at the Flash Boot loader screen. And all indications point to it being fried...very disappointed as I dont have Sprint insurance. So now it has to go back to Moto! My life revolved around this thing...sending emails and news etc...now its just the black screen of death. Beware!

bought it for music and text reading and phone capabilities. love it for all three. Active sync is too basic and why is there no exit function for the media player. I had to go to CorePlayer which way outperforms wmp. (hint, hint) Qmemory 2gb mini card fully recognized and works fine though sometimes freezes phone. I have done all updates and found them to keep the phone working well with great battery life. UPDATES were the key.

I am on my 4th moto Q. 1st one locked up on start up after shuting itself off for some "unkown" reason..2 months old! Second one did the same thing, 16 days old!! Third one lost the mic, and literally, my fourth one is 3 months old and yesterday, guess what? It froze at the verison boot up like the first. I use this Q, like a regular phone, still sucks! I treat this and all of my previous Q's like there made out of gold[$399 ] and the only thing i get out of all of it! Is more, and more wasteing alot of time and money!!! Motorola Q ='s JUNK, expensive JUNK. Dont buy this phone unless you have TIME MONEY too waste!! thanks for ur time
DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE..... EVER!
written by RogueQ, September 02, 2007
Like many of the previous posters... I shall say to you "Join the club" of one of the most horrible phones ever devised by Motorola's incompetent "C" team of engineers. Quick run down of problems. : Had phone for 3 days and all hell started. Phone froze for no reason, would not come out of sleep mode, would not receive calls, would drop calls, would turn off by itself, frequently had to take battery out to reset phone, would not start up, would freeze on start up screen, etc... If I had not spent so much money on this phone I would have shot it "more dead" than it already was. Sprint is a joke as well... no insurance... they wont even talk to you, will tell you to send it to Motorola to be fixed... that’s another story when I have 3 to 5 hours to waste. In short, called Moto tech support from USA and no one spoke English. Phone repair is 10 to 15 workdays... it has been 19 days and they cannot find my phone... I have to laugh at this point.
Come back in a week or two and I will give an update. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE DEAL. These phones are hit or miss and Motorola is still sending out Beta phones to be sold… what a crime.

I bought my Motorola Q on July 5th. It worked reasonably well (only a few annoyances) until this past Monday, when I ran the software update that Sprint recommended. After I ran the update, I started getting the following problems:
1. Phone randomly turns itself off. Cannot turn the phone back on until you remove the battery. Phone randomly turns itself off again. Repeat several times a day. 2. Signal strength is less than half what it used to be. I used to have full signal strength in my home, now I am down to only 2 bars. 3. Device sometimes makes a call, sometimes doesn't. Will get stuck on the "Dialing" screen and never connect until you turn it off, remove the battery, turn it on again, and try the call again. This whole turning on/turning off process takes about 5 minutes, plus the strain on the battery. 4. Phone sometimes rings, sometimes doesn't. I was expecting a very important phone call yesterday and waited all afternoon for it. I finally decided to test it by calling my phone TWICE from another phone. It did not ring. I turned off the phone, removed the battery, turned it on again, and voila, there were 2 voice mails on my phone, including the very important one. Yet my phone NEVER RANG! I am very disappointed that my favorite gadget now seems to be irrevocably sick. I took it to the Sprint store yesterday and they did a master reset. I didn't even get a chance to leave the store before the thing shut down on its own again, so the problem was not solved by the master reset. I do not have the Sprint insurance either, but it isn't my fault! I didn't drop it or abuse it in any way. Does anyone know how to get a replacement from Motorola?

I have had my phone for 8 months now and I would give it a 7. It had no battery life so I bought the extended battery and it is really great. My biggest issues are that there is no easy way to lock this phone and it doesn't sync everything to my outlook calendar, setting up the sync is also a pain - can anyone help?? Having a flip top would be awesome, are there any good ones out there?

I hate this phone. The battery wouldn't hold a charge. I had to purchase an extended battery which than didn't fit into the phone clip so I then had to buy a new one of those. It randomly sincs with my email so sometimes I get my mail and sometimes I don't. My new batter which I have had about a year is not dead, it won't hold a charge and I can't even turn my phone on. They need to go back to the drawing board with this one. I am going back to the blackberry.

YOU WOULD THINK THAT AFTER ALL OF THE MASS NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS WITH THE MOTO Q, MOTOROLA WOULD ASK FOR A RECALL AND REPLACE ALL OF THEM. MY FIRST Q STARTED ACTING UP AFTER ONLY 6 MONTHS. CALLS WEREN'T RECIEVEC, TEXT WEREN'T RECIEVED UNTIL 3 DAYS LATER. SCREEN WENT ALL WHITE, HAD TO RESET BY TAKING BATTERY OUT CONSTANTLY. FINALLY, PHONE WENT TO THE FLASH BOOT LOADER SCREEN. WENT TO SPRINT SERVICE CENTER, TECH TOLD SAID THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND THAT IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ALL THE TIME. I CANN'T AFFORD TO LOSE ALL OF MY CONTACTS AND INFO AGAIN.
REPLACEMENT WAS ORDERED. 2 WEEKS INTO NEW PHONE.....SAME ALL WHITE SCREEN IS APPEARING.PHONE CALLS AND TEXT MESSAGES WEREN'T RECEIVED...ETC.....PLEASE, DON'T WASTE UR MONEY OR TIME...EVEN IF IT'S FREE...SAY NO THANK U.

I have had my Q for about 3 months now. I love it. I've been able to do everything I want with it. No problems. I will say that the battery life does suck, but I bought the desktop charger because I use the phone as an alarm too. So everyday when I get up I have a fully charged phone and an extra battery charged too. As far as easily locking the keypad, you just have to hold down the home key for a couple seconds. It's a snap! I understand that a lot of people here have had problems with thier Q's but I'm totally satisfied with mine.

All I want to know is why this phone takes 13 seconds to end the call after pressing the end button. I press the end button but it does not hang up unless it feels like it. It does between the hours of 4pm-6pm 9pm-12am and 10am-1pm. What's the deal?? With the exception of these times, it still is stupid. It freezes and takes about 20 seconds to dial a call. Please tell me what the problem is.

This phone is amazingly crappy. My boss got me one to replace my run of the mill work cell, and I was so excited to have a smartphone. That was yesterday, and by this evening it had completely freaked out on me. As I write this, it's in a constant cycle of turning itself on and off. I am totally mystified. I can't use it, I can't check messages, I can't do anything. Thankfully I did keep it active long enough during one of these on/off cycles to change the profile to silent as the on and off sounds were driving me nuts. I'm not impressed.

Have had the moto Q 5 times already in 1 year.

I'm glad that i pay 7.00 extra a month for insurance because its necessary and should be mandatory for this phone. I am going on my 5th time now of having the same moto Q . about 3 of the times it shows me this "Boot loader" screen and than when you go to the store (in my case sprint technical support) they talk you that they cant do much and that you will need to order another one (which is another $50.00 each time). This is a great phone to go online with and to communicate, but it doesnt last very long. In one year have have spent hundreds of dollars just on replacement phones that doesnt even include the money spent on other stuff. If you get this phone get the insurance because you will use it in the long run (meaning the first few months). No one ever knows the answer to the problem so they will make you replace it and get another one. Good luck and hopefully yours will work better than the 5 that i have had.
Thanks, Sincerely 19yr old college student Daniel www.swaggerspot.com

By the time I got to the last comment I was laughing so hard that I was almost crying. The Moto Q is possessed!! I have had all of the problems described above and below. And am on my 3rd Moto Q and still have frozen phone. Ridiculous, really!! I will be going in for my 4th or maybe I will be lucky and after 3 I strike out and they give me a different phone. Hope your business does not depend on your Moto Q. If so, file chapter 11 right now and get it over with!
Really disappointed, especially since Consumer Reports gave it numerous thumbs up which is why I went with it. I like it, if it would only work. I guess I could always take my son's philosophy, 'who cares if it works or gets service, it looks cool phone!'
Fantastic phone!
written by Wall-E, June 17, 2008
I've had my Q since last October, and considering I've owned many phones, this is BY FAR the BEST Motorola product I have ever used. The internet is fairly quick, it meets my needs, the sync. with my exchange account is outstanding, the blutooth is fantastic, not only in my vehicle but the plaintronics headset. I also use Garmin GPS which was the best possible addition to this phone I could find! I would have liked to see Mobile 6 as opposed to 5, and an option to dial a phone number directly from a link on a web page or e-mail would be a HUGE improvement. I've had no issues whatso ever with the battery. I've only used 1 of them, and I typically get about 5 days of standby, perhaps 6. I'm slightly disappointed with the amount of RAM it has, and the ability to house more than a 2GB mini card would be great. As for the camera, well, I have 1 thing to say. IT'S A PHONE! if you want a good camera, GO BUY A CAMERA! To top it off the reception is BY far superior than anything else I've had. Clarity is absolutely the best. Kudos to motorola for this phone, I really look forward to an upgrade to a 9c w/ WM6.

This phone is terrible. Very difficult to set-up. Important features are hidden away inside menus. Camera is something to be desired. I have NEVER been able to get the bluetooth to work even though it seems to be 'discovered' on both ends. No automatic keypad lock, this is a real downer. I often forget to manually lock the phone, when it is in my pocket it randomly calls contacts.
The earpeice plug wore out within weeks. I also found it not impossible, but very time consuming to put music on the phone. On nice thing is the automatic profile feature. I will be returning to a Treo.

I too joined the craze with the Moto Q in Dec 2007 with Alltel (Now Verizon). It was good for like 2 months and since then have had problem after problem.
1)The screen turns white at random.(per tech support master reset which loses all data). 2)battery does not last. I charge at night turn on at 8:00 am and receive one call and loses half of the charge, by 12:00 pm the phone is telling me low battery once then dies. I ONLY USE IT ONCE!!(This is in last month) 3)Phone freezes. Have to take battery off to make a call or receive call. 4)Drops calls.(While in the Alltel store in town with full signal) 5)Tells me that memory is full. I have a 2gb card with like 10 pics on it. 6)Screen goes black and have command prompts. Needless to say I am going to get another one yet again and hope that I actually get one that will last a little longer. Best of luck Write comment
