Motorola Releases Sprint Q Software Update

March 13, 2007
By: Christopher Meinck

Motorola has released a software update for the Sprint Q.

To update the software on your Sprint Motorola Q, visit the software update page at Motorola. Select Sprint from "carrier type" and then select Q. You will then be able to download the Sprint Q software update. The update requires a PC and typically takes 30-45 minutes.

As soon as we get more information on what is included in the update, this page will be updated accordingly.

Discuss in the Official Sprint Q Software Update thread.

I'm a sprint employee and just happen to check for an update today, we've kinda been expecting one any day now. I followed the instructions perfectly. It took over an hour and a half. The program failed 3 times and ask me unplug my Q reboot and try again. Luckly it wasn't far enough into the update to ruin the device, b/c when it fails like that it's the same as just unplugging during a flash...wich will a device capable of being nothing more than an expensive paper weight. Once I finally got it complete I have not been able find any changes except that now in phone settings there is an option to clear the voicemail icon. If any one knows what this update includes please post it. Thanks.

Does the update run under Vista? I see active sync is needed, so I expect mobility center will work, but os is XP, 2000 and 2003. Anyone know?

If you are not running IE, you'll run into an error with the page that this links to.
(I use Opera) Just use IE throughout the process and all should be fine.

Please don't be afraid to do this update. Yes I had a little trouble but I suffer from OCD and don't have any patience. You will receive errors a few times and have to unplug and reboot...one time the phone was in flash(write mode) when it failed so it was stuck and I had to remove the batt. Your progress bar will stay on 100% for a long time when searching for updates and then stay on 49% for update in progress for like 20min. But, if you follow the directions perfectly your Q will update and now after using it for a day with the new SW and FW it is a great update. System runs much smoother and faster, has a crisp feel. Now have voicemail icon clear option, letter banner when dialing, new logo at power down, when managing folders for text you can clear whole inbox or outbox in one swipe. I'm sure ther is a little more but I haven't found it. To me the smooth "CRISP" operation and VM icon clear is plenty improvement so anything else can be considered EXTRA!

I had the same experience as Nighttrain. Be patient at the 49% point. When you need to try disconnecting USB or power cycling, it should say so in the PC application.
Be prepared to re-install third party apps.
Also, you may have some email troubles. Check the official Sprint Update thread. (Good Luck!)

I did the update on my Sprint Q, and it made the EVDO quicker and more responsive, the battery last SIGNIFICANTLY longer, quicker interface, gave me a different power down screen (that I actually don't like), and a few other small improvements like the letter bar at the top of dialing. I actually think the look of the new dialing and the power down aren't as clean looking now, but I think the update is worth it for the battery power increase and the quicker EVDO speeds.

My update also froze for a bit at 49% and I had to remove the battery at one point due to an update error, but after about 40 minutes it updated fine. Make sure to remember to check "save personal info." when installing, and to put your programs back on when finished! smilies/smiley.gif

So I have tried the Moto Update App on 2 XP machines and neither will see the phone unless it is powered off. But when powered off it will not backup my personal stuff. Any ideas or suggestions?

I ran the update and got similar results. After backing up my personal data, the update instructed me to power of my device, then reconnect it to the computer. Holding the power button was not successful, though, so i yanked the battery. After putting it back, i powered the device up and re-connected the USB cable and the install continued. At 49%, based upon the other comments, I left and did my workout. When i returned (30-40 minutes), the update had continued successfully and was waiting for me to power off and restart the Q. This worked fine and the update continued, restoring my personal settings.

Personal settings preserved were:
a) color scheme, home screen layout, and background picture
b) personal address book
c) data files (music, pictures, etc. stored internally)

All third-party applications (including Good Mobile Messaging and the 2007 Day Light Saving Time update) were erased.

I have only just completed the update, so i cannot speak to the performance improvements the other comments list, but the increased battery life and quicker response were my motivation, so here's hoping.

Is this something the Sprint Service Center should do, and or should they be trusted to do it?

If the service center messes it up you get a replacement right there it's the store's responsibility to fix the problem after that. As long as outlook has your contacts and calendar stuff synced you don't really have to worry about losing anything.

Update worked wonders for me it's like it should have been new. I HIGHLY recommend this update for anyone.

So after several hours and a few computers, all of which not seeing my device I did the unthinkable. I backed everything up and hit the master reset. After this the Moto Update Tool saw my phone (with power on) and did the install pretty seemlessly (minus on battery removal and on power cycle. I hope this helps.

I guess something installed (Docs to Go, Core Player, Google Maps, or MS Live are the only things I installed). Good luck.

So after many hours and trying 3 XP machines, I finally took the last step I could think of to let the Moto Updater see my phone (while powered on). I backed everything up and then hit the master reset, and that did the trick. It took a few power cycles, and one removal of the battery but it updated just fine. Since I have done nothing to my Q minus installing a few programs it must be one of them (Documents to Go, Core Player, Google Maps, and MS Live Search are the list). Everything seems to be working fine so if you are having trouble getting the updater to see you phone at all then I would suggest trying the master reset. Good Luck.

Is this most current?

Second phone went through smoother than the first one... I noticed the shut down was a bit faster... they need to include a reset feature on it though.. both of my Q's constantly lock up and I have to remove the battery to reset them... one of them has the click broken already... still no mms support, one can only dream smilies/smiley.gif I still dont understand why sprint says you CAN NOT do it, yet verizon q does it? oh well... I'll try out the battery life tomorrow, it would never last a whole day, it would be dead by 5pm and that was with no more 40 minutes talk time a day tops...

I upgraded my Sprint Q and things happened as warned. However here are some additional points about the install...
1) For the install instructions is says to disable PUSH through settings Start>WirelessSync>Menu>Push>ReadySync: I do not have this on my phone. Anyone else have this??? I do not have WirelessSync under Start menu.
2) After the upgrade, I noticed I still get Call errors (even though the call goes through). Anyone else still have this problem as well?
3) I noticed I used to have over 500 files in my Windows directory. Now I have less that 200. Anyone else notice this?

It would have been nice to get a Bluetooth upgrade as well. ...but no.

...one more thing I noticed. I lost the application that allows me to turn on/off the phone and/or Bluetooth. So now I can't put my phone in flight/airplane mode where the phone is off but the PDA fuctions are still on.

Jackbone... I dont know what application that was, but is weird that you mention that because my first handset, after it was done, the phone was turned off and I couldn't make calls at all... I also noticed something else, I went to add my pop3 accounts, obviously they are no longer there, but when I try to create it, it says the name is already taken, to choose another name, now that sucks because I had the name of the domain as the name of the account, now I have to default to domain1 smilies/sad.gif smilies/sad.gif smilies/sad.gif

Oh Jack... i'm assuming that was a third party app you had to do that right? if so, it was stated on the update instructions that all 3rd party apps would get erased and you need to reinstall them...

I feel the same. After seeing all these posts, I don't want to end up ruining my phone. If all the update does is give you the option of getting rid of the voicemail icon, it's not worth it. Is there any other reason to do the update? Like they say...if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I just updated mine last night, and other than 2 reboots and a freeze, the whole process only lasted 1/2 hour or so. I did have to charge it to full which was annoying. Email isn't working either, but that is a small problem. Now I just have to find out where all these improvements are located!

mhersh26- do you have a password on your Q? I had to unlock mine for the process to work. I actually took it off until it was done so it wouldn't lock again by accident.

I am not going to install the update on my Q. It runs great now. I got mine is Feb with no issues. If I do decide to install the update I will take it to a spring store location. What sinks is I will have to go to Tacoma, Wa. to do that. My local store here in Lacey, Wa. is no longer servicing. It is a real pain in the neck!!! I did attempt to call tech. Service with Sprint and they had no clue what the heck I was talking about! Grrrrrrr

It seems to me the problems are greater than the benefits. I'll update my wife's & mine when the bugs are sorted out. Also, the Q does sync with Vista you just need to download "Mobile Device 6" free from Microsoft.

update worked great. all my settings were preserved and just had to add back on apps and ringtones.

The only problem is that the Daylight savings time update does not seem to update the time anymore. Has anyone experienced this or have an idea how to fix it? I tried installing by the sync method and the CAB file method.

Does anyone know how to perform the update w/ Windows Vista? I tried and got an error msg that said I needed either Win 2000 SP 4 or Win XP SP 2. It made me abort the update with no option to bypass. I just bought a new Sprint Q and thought that this would be the best time to do the update (before using and loading apps). THANKS in advance for any help!

just got my new Sprint Q today! I love it! it does EVERYTHING I could ever want and more. I never owned a smartphone before but I played with my uncle's Blackberry and I must say they're both pretty even. Business has been getting better lately so I had to upgrade to a smartphone and this is great so far. The only problem I had so far is that when I set up my Yahoo! account I keep having to enter my password and it tries to connect but then it stops and makes me re-enter my PW and then it does it again and again and again....ugh! anyone can help with this?

While I was at the Sprint store having them do my software update, I asked them for a list of items it fixes, and I rec'd a print out which shows:

- Daylight Savings Time 2007
- Emails from Goodlink
- Replace Sprint Dial Bar with Alpha-numeric Reference Image
- Option to Clear the Voicemail Icon
- Unable to access "get more help" URL
- No Animation when Bluetooth Link is Active
- Power Cycle Ramdomly
- "No Service" on Power up
- Stuck Dialing
- The Q tries to Place a Call While being used as a Modem

Hope this helps!
