Moto Q 9h Trumps iPhone

By: Christopher Meinck
April 10, 2008

The Good Housekeeping Research Institute study engineers and a consumer panel compared 11 new QWERTY phones under $300 (suggested retail price with a two-year service) along with the iPhone ($400 suggested retail) and evaluated the phones for simplicity of text-messaging, text delivery speed, battery life, as well as ease of placing calls and voice quality. The Moto Q 9h came in second for ease of texting, beating Apple's iPhone.

Moto Q 9h vs iPhone

The Moto Q 9h's screen drew rave reviews for being large and easy to read. Not suprisingly, the phone also earned top marks on voice quality during calls. Some testers complained that the Moto Q's bulky width made holding it to the ear less comfortable.

Granted the iphone is an incomplete product but the Moto Q's days are numbered wasting real estate on the full time keyboard. Put that brilliant touch screen on the Q and we'll really have something.

What eveyone seems to be missing with the iPhone, is that in order for a user to be quick and efficient at using a keyboard (any keyboard) they need textile recognition. There is none on the iPhone because you're touching a flat surface. Being a user of both the MotoQ and the iPhone, I have to say I like the MotoQ a whole lot better. I can type without looking and I also know if i've hit the wrong key instantly... MotoQ wins my vote and I think as more people realize that the touch screen on that small of a scale is all fluff, it will die a slow and tragic death.

Having played around with both the iPhone and the HTC Touch, there's a real need for a solid physical keyboard.

All the Q needs is WM6 Pro (Touch Screen) support and maybe a larger screen.

Keep the keyboard!

Will never want all-touch. The tactility of a QWERTY keyboard is the reason I switched from a flip phone and overlooked the iPhone. Touch screens are horrible for texting, and there are things I do with my phone that I need a real D-Pad for.

I've had a Q for quite some time now and the biggest complaint I have is not being able to upgrade the OS. I shouldn't have to buy a brand new phone to do that. Because of that annoying glare I'm looking to get an iPhone this summer with the 3G release.

As someone who loves his iPod as well as most of the i-Accessories and who normally loathes anything Microsoft, the MotoQ is an amazing device. The keys blow away anything the Black-clones can throw out and I like the tactile feel of the large, wide keys. When typing on a iPhone, you feel nothing, there's not enough feedback to the screen.

Sorry lars, the MotoQ is here to stay and can only, HOPEFULLY, get better.

I've had both and the iphone glass keyboard is much harder to use than the nice tactile keyboard on the Q. I can type much faster on the Q than the iPhone. The iPhone is sexier. The browser and email reader are fantastic and those are vital components, too. So I agree the Qs days are numbered as texting and replying to email are the only thing the tactile keyboard provide an advantage.

I know the iPhone is cool to look at, but I just can't see how I will ever like a device that requires two hands to operate.

My Q has Windows Mobile 5, which could use some UI improvements to speed certain operations like switching email folders and filtering my tasks, but I have found it to be almost the perfect device.

My 2Gb flash card holds all the songs I have. Bluetooth stereo headphones work like a charm - I just cannot handle wired earbuds. Syncing with my contacts and tasks in Outlook is seemless.

Add GPS (like they've done), get MSFT to keep tweaking the UI, and I'll continue to be happy. One handed operation is the way to go for me.

The IPhone is a masterpiece in illusion folks. Invest your money in a reasonably priced device that goes beyond the "ohh, cool" factor. Use the $300 savings to outfit your Q with all the right accessories smilies/wink.gif

No surprise there, the Q is a complete data phone. Coming off a V3XX and Blackjack, I got used to the "bulky width" quickly and appreciate the "wasted space" used for a great handheld keyboard and display. The O/S comparisons could very well be a different story. Also not surprising there are such a variety of designs available for different user tastes.
