If you find the startup sound too loud, you can remove it.
You need to get a registry editor, like PHM Registry - Smartphone Edition.
Launch the program and navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER-ControlPanel-Sounds-SystemStart- Sound
Change Windows(backslash)Piano.wav to Windows(backslash)*none*
Remember to include the asterisks and backslashes where noted.

MS Internet Explorer 7.0
I was unable to install PHM Registry, but I installed the 14 day trial of Resco and it worked great. My sanity (and hearing) may now return. Thanks a million.
