Getting Started With Your Moto Q Smartphone

For many, the Moto Q will represent their first smartphone, while others are making the transition for a competing smartphone such as the Palm Treo or RIM Blackberry. Regardless, this guide is intended for new owners who are just getting started with their Moto Q. Let’s get started!

Moto Q and Mac Users

The Moto Q comes with Microsoft ActiceSync and this is not compatible with the Mac platform. In order to sync your Moto Q with your Macintosh, you will need a third party application called Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. You should also read the article Motorola Q and the Mac. You'll find even more information in our Mac and Motorola Q forums. Despite it's lack of support out of the box, the Moto Q is still a great smartphone for Mac users.

Customizing Your Ringtones

The Moto Q can use MP3’s as ringtones. It does not support ringtone services offered by Verizon. However, you can create your own ringtones for free or use ringtones you find on the web. For example, download this ringtone used in the movie "Crank".

Crank ringtone
  1. Place the file in \Application Data\Sounds
  2. Press Home > Settings > B. Sounds
  3. Scroll right to select your new ringtone

From here you can also set your alerts for Reminders, New e-mail or New text message. As a reminder, it’s likely that your existing MP3’s are very large and not made to be ringtones. You’ll want to consider editing the file QuickTime Pro or one of the other audio editing options available online.

Accessing the Web

The Moto Q requires a data package from your wireless provider in order to access the web. The Moto Q comes with Internet Explorer. Press Start > Internet Explorer to browse the web. The Moto Q allows for full web access, not WAP access found on regular cellphones. However, some sites are not designed to provide a better mobile web experience. When visiting http://www.everythingq.com from your Moto Q, the site will automatically present a Q friendly version of our website allowing to read news and participate in our Motorola Q forums.
