By: Christopher Meinck
Getting Started With Your Moto Q SmartphoneFor many, the Moto Q will represent their first smartphone, while others are making the transition for a competing smartphone such as the Palm Treo or RIM Blackberry. Regardless, this guide is intended for new owners who are just getting started with their Moto Q. Let’s get started!
Using the Moto Q Phone FeaturesThere are a number of ways to initiate a phone call on your Moto Q.
Maximizing The Battery LifeTo maximize battery life on your Moto Q, do the following:
Adding a Bluetooth headset or deviceTo use a Bluetooth headset with your Moto Q, you first need to “pair” the Moto Q with the headset. This enables your Moto Q to communicate with the headset. Follow these directions to “pair” a Bluetooth headset with your Moto Q smartphone:
Quick Access To Main FunctionsThe Moto Q keyboard allows you to easily access main functions including email, camera and speakerphone.
Turn Off ScreenThe Moto Q does not have a traditional power button. The red button simply ends a call. Holding this button completely shuts down the Q and your wireless service. To turn off the screen, press and hold the key left of 0 (same key used to access your email). This can also improve your battery life.
Flight ModeFor owners of the Sprint Moto Q or Verizon Moto Q owners with the MOL2 uppgrade, do the following to enter “flight mode” or turn off the wireless portion of your smartphone.
Keyboard LockTo avoid your phone from making random calls, you can lock the keyboard.
You can also lock the keyboard by just pressing the Home key followed by the space bar. Moto Q and Mac UsersThe Moto Q comes with Microsoft ActiceSync and this is not compatible with the Mac platform. In order to sync your Moto Q with your Macintosh, you will need a third party application called Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. You should also read the article Motorola Q and the Mac. You'll find even more information in our Mac and Motorola Q forums. Despite it's lack of support out of the box, the Moto Q is still a great smartphone for Mac users.
Free SoftwareThe Moto Q runs Windows Mobile 5 smartphone operating system. As such, there are a number of free software applications and utilities for the Moto Q. As with any operating system, buggy software can lead to an unstable OS or in this case unstable smartphone. Use caution when installing third party software. Customizing Your RingtonesThe Moto Q can use MP3’s as ringtones. It does not support ringtone services offered by Verizon. However, you can create your own ringtones for free or use ringtones you find on the web. For example, download this ringtone used in the movie "Crank".
From here you can also set your alerts for Reminders, New e-mail or New text message. As a reminder, it’s likely that your existing MP3’s are very large and not made to be ringtones. You’ll want to consider editing the file QuickTime Pro or one of the other audio editing options available online.
