Phone-Only Contacts / Appointments

I have a work Exchange server that I want to sync contacts, tasks, and appointments from.

I also have personal contacts and appointments that I want to maintain just on my phone.

Unfortunately, Active Sync sees fit to delete anything on my phone that doesn't exist on the computer.

Is there any way to tell it not to do this?

while setting the sync preferences for exchange make sure you've selected "keep items on device".
