Default ActiveSync without ActiveSync Exchange?

Hello all-
I've only had a Q for a few weeks now but have learned a lot from the forums. Thanks very much to everyone.

My employer is giving me a hard time about activating the ActiveSync Exchange option in the Exchange server, my question to you is can you "configure the server" (on the device and on ActiveSync though the PC) and connect to your server if the server is NOT set up for it? Or does the server ony need to be set up for ActiveSync in order to push the email? I'd manually pull the email myself if I could just connect to the server via the device. I guess I am not sure if I am configuring it wrong or if its impossible without the server setup.

Any help would be appreciated.

You can always install activesync locally and that will sync all of your information. Then you would need to use some sort of push email solution to get your new emails when away from your desk. If you had vpn capibilities at the office you could vpn in your Q to connect to the exchange server and download your email instead of pushing the mail out.

Thanks djlactose, I have installed and use regularly activesync on my PC to sync vis USB....however I want email when I am on the road away from the office (I should have specified that, sorry). I figured the email solution would be hooking up with the server. I am not sure of the vpn situation. Thanks.

The only thing you can do is a push solution without a vpn, and a push setup requires the server to be configured to do so. Do you have remote access to your office? If so you may have a VPN solution already there. I setup remote access for companies for a living so I may be able to help you out if you find out more information.

Yes, I have remote access......I actually work out of a home office so I definately know that much. I guess I am just not sure what a VPN is, probaby have it though. I think the push setup where the Exchange Server is configured is out (so to answer my original question, to link into the Exchange Server via Activesync it has to be configured at the server?) so this may be my only choice. Your help is appreciated.

If you have remote access and it is not through a website (like gotoyourpc.com) then you can configure your Q to login to a vpn by going to settings -> Connections -> VPN. You will need to know the type of VPN, your username and password and then set that as your work connection. Then when you create the email account select that your email is at work. You then enter in your work exchange server settings and it should work when it attempts to download email. It is hard for me to give you exact directions without knowing the network design of your office, but hopefully that at least points you in the right direction.

That kind of does, I just dont know off hand the type of VPN, etc. Any idea how I could tell that stuff? I know my outlook is connected through a proxy server, which server would I use?

I would try pptp first and if that doesn't work you are going to need a tech to give you the ipsec passcode. With pptp you will need your username, password and possibly domain depending on the setup. Once you have that you should be able to go into the outlook setting on the office pc and copy the server information onto the q.

Most likely you will need the same server as in outlook. If your IT department has security nutts (like me) then it will possible need a different proxy address that you may not know but I believe in KISS so use the outlook server.
