Wireless sync and battery

It seems that if you have wireless sync set for "constant" push/pull, there is a constant connection (the arrows showing data connection show always instead of the radio tower for signal strength) If you check the wireless sync activity log, there is only a small amount of data transferred with an email and only a few seconds duration.

If this is true, assuming there is not a constant exchange of email, is the Q using more battery with this "constant connection" if it is only sending small amounts of data compared to setting wireless sync to check every 20 min (for instance), even if there is no mail sometimes in this time span?
