Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. |
I think with Verizon's current pricing structure, if you want data, with push email, getting exchange server is the way to go.
I signed up with exchange server from sherweb.com (originally I was with 1and1.com, but they didn't have exchange 2007 at the time, so I switched). I pointed my DNS entries for email for my email account that I have with 1and1.com to my sherweb account. (If you use gmail or something like that, I think you just forward the mail to the sherweb, but I'm not sure)
Then, I downloaded my free copy of Outlook 2007 (that's a great bonus, by the way) from Sherweb. I pointed my outlook 2007 to the sherweb server, and I was set. At this point, my Outlook had 2 data files, my old one, stored on my computer, and the new one, that was a mirror of the one at Sherweb. I think I did copy some of current items from my old outlook data file to the new one at this point, although I could access the old outlook data file kind of like an archive.
Then I setup active sync (I'm still on XP) to sync to an exchange server. Then I setup a new partnership on the phone to sync to activesync on my PC via USB. At this point, the phone got the settings for the exchange server from my PC, and from then on, the phone syncs calendar, tasks, contacts, and email directly to the sherweb exchange server.
The usb Activesync is still used to sync my SmartphoneNotes, IE favorites, and media. I can also use Activesync on my computer to setup which email folders to sync (besides the main inbox). Once the email folders are set, my activesync on the phone syncs those folders directly with the Sherweb server.
So, basically, my outlook on the computer still works the same, except that the data file is mirrored from my computer to the Exchange server hosted by Sherweb. My phone syncs data directly with the Sherweb server too. In the 9 months I've been with them, I've had one day when the service was not working properly for my phone. I think that is pretty good, much better than I got with wireless sync. I often get emails on my phone before I get them on my pc. If my internet connection on my pc has problems, I can still access the data on my computer, and then when the connection is restored, it performs a sync to update everything.
As a bonus, using exchange 2007, I can get html email on my phone.
The only thing I would change is to have my Notes synced wireless too - but with wm6 standard, I don't think that is possible.
Hope this helps ....
