I have the opportunity to pick up a Q for a really good price from a friend and would like to avoid paying for the data plan...I have a Moto e815 which I unlocked free WAP and java on and use Mobile Web heavily. Since my PDA borke the other day after 4 years of service to me, I would like to combine devices, and it looks like this would be a good device.
Can I stick with the $5.00/month Mobile Web plan to get to the web on my phone, or would I need a data plan. Moreover, would I be able to get Opera Mini on the Q to surf the web w/o a data plan (that's what I have on the e815 now and I love it).
Perhaps if I called VZW and told them to block NationalAccess? Or would that disable everything except calls?
To elaborate a little, you would not be able to use mobile web, and using opera or IE would be on the per kb rate which would crest $5 impossibly quickly and as you noted putting a block on it would stop everything except for sms as I understand it.
I was in the same situation as you. Mobile web is not compatible with the Q. You must convert to the data plan if you wish to use the internet on the Q. Or you can pay the $0.015/kb pay as you go rate.

From what I understand it doesn't matter if you have data or not. Any PDA phone will automatically connect to the network and stream. If you don't have the data package you have to pay per kb. You shouldn't get a PDA phone if you don't want to pay a little extra for the data package.
