Smile Vzw Usb Air Card

Just purchased the VZW USB modem a couple of days ago,and wanted to give a personal review. After purchasing a new gateway notebook, I was looking for a good portable means of internet access. I weighed the pros and cons of tacking on an additional monthly data fee, (and a rather costly one at that), I decided to go ahead and buy the USB modem, and its monthly fee. I guess the ability to use this device with my notebook and my desktop was the deciding factor.

Anyway, to make a long story short, the purchase was well worth the price! I am very impressed with both the speed and the functionality of this cool little device. Even in areas where I was down to 2 bars on the signal meter the speeds were still quite amazing.

In short, anyone looking for a fast, reliable, and neat looking way to get internet on the go, and the fee doesnt deter you, this is a GREAT device.

Thanks, as always.

If you have a Motorola Q, which is the main reason perople visit this site, you do not need the aircard, the Q works just as well.

Tried the Q as a tethered modem for a while, a very short while. Although the feature worked adequately, the notebook obliterated the battery.and the tethered speed couldn't compare with the air card.

Purely a personal choice.

Thanks, as always

Please advise as to the particular aircard you use, I have a friend with a Verizon aircard and we have compared speeds, they are comparable. I have not had an issue with battery drainage while using the tethered Q either. I have considered dropping the unlimited data plan and the tether charge, but reconsidered after comparing speeds with my friend. Maybe there are reasons his card and my Q were close is speeds and I'm missing out on a faster connection with another card.

The aircard I have is the USB720 (USB connecter). As I Mentioned, in my personal experience, using both methods, the air card provided me better speed. Both methods speeds are somewhat governed by the networks signal strength. As I also mentioned, the fact that the USB720 worked equally well in my desktop, was the deciding factor for me. Although the price, I can understand, is not for everyone.

What speed are you seeing on the card? The Q gets 850-950Kb/s down, 90-150 Kb/s up --- only way I could see the card go faster is if you got a RevA card in a RevA area.

Wow. 900+ kbs down on the Q? I wish i could get those speeds. I tether and only get around 150-400 kbs down most of the time although i have seen 750 or so on occasion. Latency seems to run very high at .6-1.7 sec or more. I have tried the USB 720 modem in the store on RevA but signal strength there was lousy and was getting comparable speeds to my Q.
