Exclamation VZW is totally lost

Next week I am leaving for what is affectionately called 'Summer Camp.' This year I am going to Camp Shelby, Mississippi for three weeks. I called VZW to check on service there and at Hattiesburg, MS. I was told that that area only has analog service and that pulling data would cost $0.22/minute. WOW!! I was going to use my Q to pull data so I can keep up with my studies using PDAnet. Not a lot, just enough to get my homework and transmit homework. Ha! Not at $0.22 per minute!!

Not being able to use my data plan, I planned on saving a few bucks and cancelled my data plan. I called VZW today to verify that my data plan had been cancelled. It had been and I was happy. The VZW rep asked why I had cancelled my data plan. I explained to her and her reply was, "Do you mind if I check that?" I let her and she said that digital service was indeed available. Okay, I added the data plan back.

Now...I got her name and other information I could use to file a complaint in case I can't get digital service while I am away. I know, we've talked about this before, but this is ridiculous.

The first tip-off is that the Q is a digital phone only, if AMPS was available in the area, your Q wouldn't pick it up -- if you are in the United States, it's either Unlimited (a.k.a 5 GB's in VZW speak) or bust. I wouldn't worry about it. But if you get there and now signal, I'd try to find a way to put the service on hold.

Just checked with their online coverage check tool, and it says they have "extended digital signal" both in Camp Shelby and Hattiesburg. I am currently in an extended network and I only get 1x data service (no EV-DO signal for 50 miles), so you might be looking at only having a 1x signal, nonetheless you should get a signal (according to their coverage check).

ha, VZW or not, would you really rely on what a entry-level call center lackey says?

You'd be better off talking to someone out in Camp Shelby and Hattiesburg and ask them how VZW service is out there.

I wouldn't rely on those online coverage maps. I doubt they're updated on a regular basis and they don't take into account topography, just probably two-dimensional distance to nearest tower.

I called VZW back. They said that I should not have any problems at the area code I am going. So, that makes 2 'yea' and 1 'na.' Maybe the first day I called was the person I talked to's last day. LOL
