I found instructions here. It looks like you need to follow that link "register for my account" if you have not already done so.

You don't need to register your account with them. Your phone includes your email account information and verizon's smtp server sends the message as though it came from your account. It works the same way as you can telnet on to a smtp server and make up an email address.

Your login account is the same as your account to sign into verizon and pay your bill online. Username is <phone number>@vzwmail.net and then password is online password. The vzwpix account is no longer needed (since november last year) to send emails out.

Is there a solution for this problem for people like me who's not a Verizon customer? I'm with AT&T. Using smtp.west.cox.net - is there a work around this problem to be able to send email?

You need to look up what the settings are for AT&T, they most likely filter SMTP mail as well to prevent the sending of spam. This is the Verizon Wireless forum so most people will probably only be able to tell you about Verizon, I would check with the AT&T forum for the settings.
