Default Verizon "Wireless sync" vs pop3 email?

I hope someone can tell me the difference between using Verizon's Wireless Sync and just setting my pop3 email to automatically download to my phone. Verizon had me set up Wireless Sync last night and it seems like a waste of time- not to mention screwing up my outlook. What are the advantages to using Wireless Sync? I think I'm going to remove it tonight.

wireless sync basically combines ALL of your email address contact lists and everything..just like active sync does and brings them over to your Q. imagine logging into your computer and grabbing files over to your Q. thats called PUSH technology. Now...pop3 email is PULL technology...your phone will basically log onto your email account and display your emails...either one works, and both can be programmed to do it automatically...i just have mine set up as pop cuz i dont use the wireless sync cept for scheduling.

ahhhh. Thank you for the explanation. I just added my email to pop. I just set the Wireless Sync function to "disable" (I think) so if I need it, I can still access it. Do you happen to know, if while using wireless sync, e-mails come in real time? that would be a big avantage.

Is that right? I haven't figured this out yet.

So if I set it to pop3, then it pulls regularly to whatever interval (30min?) that I set right?

If I use activeSync, I thought it would "push" the e-mails to me semi-regularly (not sure of the interval though).

Do I have it wrong?

Wireless Sync is realtime* push. ActiveSync is not, it is pull.

*The only "lag" is the interval that the Wireless Sync servers use to check your POP3 account(s). As soon as the Wireless Sync servers gets the email, they push it to the Q (during the days/times that you setup in Wireless Sync).

If using Wireless Sync for business email, Exchange and Notes, it is true real time. I actually get my Lotus Notes email a few seconds sooner on my Q than I do on my PC when I am in the office.

Let me clarify a little bit here:

The Verizon Q has 3 email modes:
Wireless Sync Exchange/outlook
Wireless Sync POP
Outlook Express POP

Wireless Sync has two modes: Exchange/Outlook Sync, and POP Sync. You can use these both at the same time. The Exchange Sync requires a PC Monitor on your computer that monitors your MS Exchange mailbox and instantly pushes the changes to your device. (I usually get emails on my device before I get them from Outlook in cached mode.) This is configured on wirelesssync.vzw.com. From that website you can also add POP accounts to have wireless sync check for you, at certain intervals. All emails using Wireless sync, whether they be from Exchange or from POP will be combined on your Q under the "Outlook Email" folder.

The other way to get POP mail is to set up the device itself to check a POP mailbox. You can do this by going into Outlook Express Portable (the email app on the Q) and going to menu > options > New account. The advantage of setting up a pop account in this manner is that it keeps the emails from this account separate from your main Outlook emails (I use Wireless Sync on my work computer, and use POP to check my personal mailbox.) On the welcome screen you will be able to distinguish which account has a new message. You can set this up to check every 10 minutes or longer, or to only check when you do a send/recieve.

Default PC Must be on

Very nice explanation of the differences. There is one thing that made the choice easy for me: The way I understand it, if I use Wireless sync to get my Outlook mail, my Laptop must be on and syncing with the Exchange server. Most of the times I need my e-mails on my Q, my Laptop is in the bag in my trunk. We don't have Exchange 2003 SP 2 so I cannot sync directly with the server.

Therefore, I set up a Redirect rule in Outlook to send all my Exchange mail to a POP3 account and created a matching account on my Q that syncs every 15 minutes.

Does this logic make sense or am I missing something.

I know of a lot of offices that have set up a "farm" workstation, where its only job is the run wireless sync for all the Q users. This would be a better solution than POP, because you get your contacts and tasks truly synced.

Personally, I have setup a VMWare server, and on it I am running a clean install of XP with just Office and Wireless Sync installed. The only thing it does is forward my info to my Q.

Interesting idea. Do you need to set up Outlook clients or mailboxes for each user or can this be done just with PC Monitor. If all mails go to one mailbox on the farm machine, security could be a problem.

Thanks for the tip.

Actually, the only reason I want to be able to use the Sync to Outlook is to be able to have additional folders on my Q to move mail to. I sync contacts and caledar through Active Sync.
