Will this method of setup ( the one where you set it up from the Q ) ...will it be the one to save your contacts so when you do the update, you can then just sync it and your contacts will come back up?

The Verizon Q has 3 email modes:

Wireless Sync has two modes: Exchange/Outlook Sync, and POP Sync. You can use these both at the same time. The Exchange Sync requires a PC Monitor on your computer that monitors your MS Exchange mailbox and instantly pushes the changes to your device. (I usually get emails on my device before I get them from Outlook in cached mode.) This is configured on wirelesssync.vzw.com. From that website you can also add POP accounts to have wireless sync check for you, at certain intervals. All emails using Wireless sync, whether they be from Exchange or from POP will be combined on your Q under the "Outlook Email" folder.

The other way to get POP mail is to set up the device itself to check a POP mailbox. You can do this by going into Outlook Express Portable (the email app on the Q) and going to menu > options > New account. The advantage of setting up a pop account in this manner is that it keeps the emails from this account separate from your main Outlook emails (I use Wireless Sync on my work computer, and use POP to check my personal mailbox.) On the welcome screen you will be able to distinguish which account has a new message. You can set this up to check every 10 minutes or longer, or to only check when you do a send/recieve.
FYI.
You can also sync with an Exchange Server without using the VZW Sycn. Its actually very nice, fast, and works really well. We at our company all love it.
There is a little bit of setup, but for the most part is very easy!

I have an AOL email account that I set up using AOL IMAP. I can set the increments to check for new mail (15 minutes to days) and which it pulls email off the AOL server, but I would like to send and receive emails on a more real time basis. Is Verizon's wireless sync a better option for me?

Wireless Sync is simply Verizon's way of making you pay to get your email. Try setting up POP3. It works so much better.

Default Wireless Sync

I set up the Wireless Sync and I like it. If you are still syncing with the cable as well you need to un-check email in the sync set up on your computer. Just get your email via wireless. you will like it bettter in the long run. Also, in your email account setup in Outlook be sure to check to leave a copy of the email on the server. That way you will get it on the Q and in Outlook.

I'm very new to this technology as well as my new Verizon MotoQ. In truth, I miss my dial phone. We are a very small shop running Exchange Server 2003. I was voted the IT administrator during a brief trip to the bathroom. Can you tell me exactly how to set up my Q to wirelessly sync to the Exchange Server without using VZW Sync? (or at least point the way) Without your great replies I would have never known and would continue to rely on Verizon. My end game is to receive Outlook updates while on the road.

I wish I had a head for this stuff. Thanks in advance.

Default PC Monitor Download

It seems that VZW requires downloading the PC Monitor software from their site via a Java applet. I am having trouble as java fails on my machine. Can anyone point me to a direct file download or send it to me?

thanks in advance.

Question

I am a newbie here, and I have a few questions, sorry if they seem mundane. I am a student using the Q to help manage time, music, and my cell phone calls. I would like to get my email to my phone, but I do not know if I should use POP or wireless sync. I have a hotmail, gmail, and michigan state univ. email account. THe most important one is my MSU account with hotmail/gmail being tied for second. Is there a way that I can get my emails, and possibly even respond to them without having the PDA data plan? Is getting POP email or wireless email free to do, and if not does anyone know the charges? I read through this thread and understand that you can set your phone to check for new emails at a time interval of your choosing...is this where you would be charged or are you charged per message? Sorry for so many questions.

Thank you in advance.

So I was in Panera (bakery/sandwich place) today and saw people tooling around on the net using wifi. then i though to myself, "I wonder if my black q has wifi?" So i'm looking around and see something called wireless sync. Woot, I guess thats it. awesome, Lets install it. so I did. obviously I was wrong. I was perfectly happy with POP. so can I uninstall it and then forget it exists, or have I now opened a door that cant be shut? when the install was done and I noticed it changed my home screen, I almost had an anurism and heart attack simultaneously. I hate annoying programs that try to take everything over. make it go away
