Push is when the server contacts the device to send new messages received, rather than the device polling the server on a schedule or manually to check for messages.
Advantages? You have lower data usage if e-mail is delivered less frequently than your schedule (i.e., if you get two e-mails an hour and have polling set for 5 minutes, you will have wasted 10-11 data connections to the server.) Your battery life may be lower as well, because you are only getting data when there is data to get.
A really good push server can have a schedule of its own, so that, say, you can tell it not to push mail to you from midnight until 6 am, so that if you receive mail during that time your phone will not make a noise while you are sleeping, say. There also could be filters that you set, so that you are only pushed mail when particular conditions are set (mail from your boss, mail sent to you rather than as a cc, mail from a particular domain, etc.)
And, of course, you get your messages closer to the time that they are delivered.
