Default Vcast???

So, I really don't understand why the Q can't get VCAST. My brother got the Env for Christmas, along with the VCast package. For $15 a month, it includes Mobile Web 2.0 with unlimited access. When I asked Verizon about putting VCast onto the Q, they said the only way they could do that is if I purchased the unlimited data package--which I am not planning on doing. Does anyone know anything more about this?

The rep must have misunderstood you. What that means is that you get similar benefits with the web access. You are not able to access the VCast on the Q.

VCast is accessed through the BREW Get-It-Now browser on the phone. That browser is something built-in on the non-PDA phone models. The Q/TREO/BB devices do not offer it. The EnV your brother got has that BREW platform...also how he will get his ringtones, and use applications such as VZ Navigator.

Sorry you cannot access it, however, you will get so many more advantages with the Q. As a sidenote, if you didn't add on the Unlimited data for $44.99 a month try not to access the web and data features on the Q. You will otherwise see one HUGE bill. Example. I used 280 Megs last month with it....that will total out to $4200 for a month if I hadn't had unlimited...OUCH.

How else would you listen to streaming music in a way that's doesn't violate VZW TOS?

Violate is such an ugly word.... I prefer ... extend :-). Technically, anything you do beyond checking e-mail and light surfing violates the VZW TOS. If you were to... say... download TCPMP from EQ.com via your phone, a strict reading of the TOS would say you are in violation. I'm not saying it's right to violate the TOS, but VZW doesn't even seem to care.... so I certainly don't.

The VCAST is probably just a few months off. Adobe has already developed Flash-lite for the smartphone and Q variety. BREW basically taps upon flash-lite to provide the graphical interface to BREW, which already exists in BETA for these phones I understand. Chances are that we will all see an option to add this to our phones in the near future. I thought it was already implemented when I bought my phone, and was not happy to find it missing. Although it usually means some things are locked out so they can sell you things it also provides a nice interface to many things. I hope they find a happy medium on that avenue and provide BREW soon. I really didn't see too much exciting in the VCAST anyway, but it was nice for a bit of comedy now and then. The applications and a few games they had were sweet!

Before I got my Q, I used the hell out of the Get it Now service. News, weather etc. I found it is a great feature, but I love what I have now even though it's the data plan. Get it Now has some great applications if you are a "lite" user of services.
