Music or Audio Tethering My Laptop Via My Q

I have a Windows XP based Laptop with WiFi card, no BlueTooth.
I have a Q phone with SmartTweaks in it.
Next week I'll be in an area with no WiFi but will have Verizon EV

Whats is the best method to tether my Laptop to my Q for internet access, AND how do I do it?

I've read so much I'm confused. Allegedly with SmartTweaks I can "pick the lock" Verizons has on my Q so as to get "Broadband" speed by tethering it to my Laptop.

Any clear help would be most appreciated.

Do you know what hardware version you have on your Q? MOL1, MOL2, MOL3?

Your options are:

MOL1 : ##32.... I forget the number, but you can search for it and there's a step-by-step how-to to tether your Q the "old" way.
MOL1-MOL3: Pay $34 for PDAnet. Greatest investment I have ever made. One time fee, and provides ActiveSync and BT DUN
MOL1-MOL3: The most "ethically correct" method is to call VZ and ask them to add the $15 tethering plan. You can add it and remove at will so if this is a one-time occurance, it's only $15 -- over 50% savinngs on PDAnet. However, PDAnet pays for itself if you are a mobile professional. I myself find having my oil changed one of the most productive hours of my day since I just go into the waiting room, log into work in a distraction-free environment, and bang out what I need... most of the time my car is ready sooner than I would like it to, but you can't win them all .

Thanx for making that clear. I followed your advice and purchased PDAnet.
Yada, yada, yada, it works great. It almost seems too simple.
Now I've read a lot about Dial Up Networking using the 777...trying to avoid getting busted by Verizon. Is that something completely different or am I cool as I am (assuming I stay under their 5 gig/month limit) ?
Thanx! -Z-

The MOL1 was the only release where direct-DUNing (w/o PDAnet) allowed #777 to be used. With PDAnet, your phone proxy's your connection in a way that unless VZW is sniffing packets and realized you are using protocol's no program on your phone supports, I doubt there is any way they can tell you are proxy'ing the phone.

In the short: You're cool as longas you stay under 5GB/month

What do I tell Verizon to get the $15 a month tethering fee.. I called customer service today & they were TOTAL idiots, they said it would be $59.99.. then I asked them about the $15 & $30 fee... listed on

THIS WEBPAGE:
http://b2b.vzw.com/productsservices/...ssconnect.html

they were confused & kept making me wait while they were "trying" to figure it out.

I have a Q through my business & have the unlimited data plan

Thanks for any help

Default BroadBand Access Connect

Wow they sure are clueless. I just had it put on my account (OUCH) with no trouble. Just ask them to add the BroadBand Access Connect option to your features. Your PDA plan stays the same, it's an additional line item at $15/mo. on your bill. One thing that is nice though is that you can add and remove it at any time as much as you want (within reason I suppose) with no change to contract terms so maybe I might later do the...ahem...other thing. Oh, and your first month's usage is FREE. Make sure they put that promo line item on your bill too.

One advantage of this arrangement (aside from it being "legal" and "ethical") is that you can surf from any BT enabled PC without installing any additional applications or drivers. I've done it from 4 or 5 different PC's & Macs already that way. And with BT, Active Sync remains active. With the USB option or PDAnet you have to install things for the tethering to work, and turn on Modem Link which kills Active Sync, etc.

They aren't so clueless (sometimes). You have to have a data plan before you can tether you Q with VZW. So, the $59.99 is right, if that is what they meant, then the $15 is on top of that.

There is another way not mentioned (my way). Get a copy of PDAnet with a hack and don't pay for it. Tether your phone and don't pay the $15. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR BILL IF YOU DO THIS...I AM IN NO WAY LIABLE.

Yea, I told them several times I had the unlimited data plan... anyways. I ended up finding out who our company rep was & calling her (I know, I know, I should have done that first)

She said she would activate my phone, told me to go to verizonwireless.com & get the latest software updates for my phone. - Which I did, and which it deleted all my pictures I had on my phone

Anyways, she said that when I plugged my phone into my computer it would "know" and would start uploading software.. well - that didnt happen.

So I went online (I have wifi at the house & was able to get on the net on the laptop when I wanted) and found the vzaccess download.. I did that.. and I STILL cant get it to work... I went to section on my phone & activated the modem & everything UGH! Anyone out there use their Q as a tethered modem that could tell me what program or how the heck your laptop knows that the modem is there?

Thanks
Mel

Well, first off make SURE the BBA feature IS active on your account otherwise you won't be allowed to authenticate wether you have the VZ Access Manager software or not. After you ascertain that you DO have the feature, run VZAM software on your PC to install modem drivers. It will then ask you to plug in your phone. Be sure Modem link is ACTIVE and you are at your home screen. Plug it in and if VZAM asks you for login credentials, enter the following: your 10 digit phone number@vzw3g.com password vzw, dial number #777. Although this might already be done for you from the installation routine. If so, then you should be good to go after VZAM connects you.

Well you have the tethering and verizon access manager installed correct?

1. Connect Q to laptop using activesync. Let it sync or stop it.

2. Go into your modem link on your phone and hit activate. From there you hit "okay." Wait a few seconds, unplug from phone then reconnect. Hit Done.

3. Launch your Access Manager software. Go into options and hit refresh signal levels to make sure you are getting what is on your phone if not already.

4. Hit connect and in a few seconds you are connected.

HTH
