Default You do not have to pay or extend your contract

I just bought 2 different Qs (the Q and The Q9M) from ebay. I did NOT pay to activate either of them. I did NOT have to extend my contract. I even had to call customer service to activate the Q9M.

You must at least attempt to activate your phone online to avoid the fee. If you switch from a smartphone to a regular phone or (vice versa) you may have to pay a fee because of the data plans and feature exclusive to the smartphone type devices.

However, they should only extend your contract if you buy the phone from Verizon. Maybe this is what happened in your case n99hockey? Otherwise, you were given bad information and bad customer service.

Insurance, etc. follows the user not the phone. I had a used treo 650 and insurance replaced it which was purchased on a regular flip phone. No contract extension. ESN swap is charged when you do it in store only. Online or through CS there is no fee or contract extension.

I read an article last week that said Sprint and Verizon are gonna drop the whole "extend you contract" thing everytie you make a change to your account in order to keep customers from leaving. Let me see if I can find it.

Edit: here is one of the links: http://newsreleases.sprint.com/phoen...oom&ID=1074436

Edit 2: this is an article from Phonescoop.com http://www.phonescoop.com/

Yeah I used to switch back and forth between phones longer than 3 months ago. All I did was log into my account online and swap ESN numbers. No charge or contract extension.
