Default Software Update

For those of you that have had to deal with me you know I am not very tech savy...

My Black Q has been a little slow so I called to see how I update it since I will be traveling a lot in the coming months. When I caleld they said that a software update will cause an entire system reset and I will lose every setting! I think I can back up my contacts, although I do not want to have to, by using wireless sync. My contact in outlook on both PC's I use do not match up with my phone contacts.

Do I have any other options? What settings will I all lose?

the phone will go back to out of box settings... so all will be lost unless backed up.

With File Manager find pim.vol and copy it to your storage card. Then copy that to your computer desktop. When you are finished with the update then you can copy the pim.vol back onto the phone and at least your contacts will be safe. But I would try the Sprite Backup too, as it "ghosts" your phone and puts everything back as it used to be before the update. PPl who have used it like it a lot. Good luck with your update.

Default quick question

I just got a motoq the other day and i'd like to update to the new MOL I got everything hooked up and i found the post about saving your contacts but will this force me to call verizon again to have the phone connected or because the ESN and other information is already on their servers can i just dial *228 and have the phone configured automatically after I update?

I'm not with Verizon so I can't give you a definitive answer. But you will have to reactivate the phone because all the network settings will be lost. I have never had any luck just calling Alltel's number to activate a phone, always had to wait on a person. If you have a lot of stuff on your phone it would be a good idea to look into Sprite Backup. Maybe someone from Verizon can help you better. I have never had to do a MOL update though there is one for mine. It's working, keep it simple. Hope you find someone to help you.

Yeah thanks for the help my verizon account is through work though and I had to pull some strings to get this phone and the unlimited data plan. I'd rather just be happy that it works and not fix it unless it's broken although I really wanna just take the damn thing apart and see how it ticks haha. I'll let this one go until I see a huge need for it. I got slick installed which is way better than most other programs I've used or msging. I'd like to find a program that will allow me to connect to an IRC network. and then maybe a new email/browser clients and I'd be done playing around for a bit. Thank you very much for your response

That's my plan, too. When it becomes a brick then there is nothing to loose so I will do the update then. Mine isn't so drastic. It's a patch for phones that freeze doing to many things at once or certain functions. Mine hasn't had that problem so I'm not in any hurry. Later.....
