The Q is a digital phone, not a multi-mode phone, so it does not receive or convert analog signals. This being said, I used to have a multi-mode phone that could receive both digital and analog and then switch between them as the phone saw fit. When used at our cottage in remote northern Wisconsin, the phone would switch to analog at times when it thought the digital service was not available or weak. When it did this, calls would not go through and if they did they would drop often. It also really sucked the battery in analog mode. The Q though works very well in this area, having only to deal with the digital signal. The Q performs better than any other phone I have had, reception wise. I even get data service there, though it is a little on the slow side.
It's great to have it tethered to the laptop on the picnic table and get internet access in the middle of the forest, though when it is -20 degrees out like last weekend that is not real fun.
