Default Question about Data Plan

I just got the Q from Verizon. I still have my 15 day trial. I got the data plan b/c they would not give me the phone without it. Anyway I am paying $31 for the data plan (I get a discount through my husband's company) but I have seen others say they get data plans for much cheaper with other carriers. I just went to the Sprint side and their data plan was listed for $49.99 but I have seen some people say the get it for $20. Also I looked into Cingular but theirs is $40 a month. Everyone talks about how expensive Verizon's is but I don't see a difference when I look into it. What am I missing?
Thanks!

49.99 i think is high for sprint...theres i understand is 15 bucks for unlimted (or atleast thats what sprint users say) versus the 44.99 for verizon...although sprint doesnt let you send MMS (picture messages to other phones) but even if they did i dont see them having there plan cost 45 bucks...but what do i know....so with that understand yes, verizon is fairly high.

Sprint PowerVision unlimited data is $15/month.
Sprint Phone as Modem plan: $40/month

Verizon if you get a Voice/Data Bundle: 1350 min + unlimited data $109.99 (79.99 for the minutes/30.00 for the unlimited data.) Note: VZW's data plan does not include use of phone for a modem, nor does Sprint's. I'm not sure how much extra VZW's modem plan is.

$30 is the cheapest i've seen verizon's unlimited data and that's with the 450 or 1350 minute Voice/Data bundles. They don't give you any options in between. I use about 800 minutes, so i have the 900 minute plan with Sprint for $59.00 + $15 unlimited Data + $10.00 unlimited texts for a total of $84/month before taxes. I paid $10 for texting with Verizon but only got 500 domestic texts and unlimited in network.

Sprint shows 3 levels of PowerVision Data plans, $15/$20/$25 plans There is no use for getting the higher priced ones as the only reason they are priced higher is for SprintTV access and Sprint Music store downloads, which don't work with the Q.

I was with VZW for 5 years, and i hated to leave because it was and still is my preference, but Sprint is pretty darn good too and I'm saving a pretty good amount a month. $35-40 to be exact.

Oh ok I see. I've wondered what other companies charge for data. I understand your hesitance with leaving Verizon. I've had it for 7 years and would hate to leave. It is expensive for the data plan. I just got the $79.99 bundle with 450 minutes and unlimited date. With my husband's 20% discount it ends up being $64 which isn't bad. I was wondering if I could get a data plan somewhere else cheaper but when you figure in the voice plan then I am probably doing best to stay with Verizon and I would hate to leave.

The $49.00 plan is the Black Berry or the PCMCIA plan. For the Q, it's like aggieman said. For me, Sprint's the only one on the tower a mile from my house according every coverage map I've looked at, but I do like the unlimited data plan for $15.00/mo.

that's good for $64 a month if 450 minutes is plenty for you and you don't need to add text msging.

you can get the same with sprint plus unlimited text for essentially the same price though. 450 min $39.99 + unlimited data $15 + unlimited text $10=$65.00/month

but if you are truly happy with VZW and comfortable with what you are getting for your money, no need to switch. I'm in Dallas where VZW and Sprint are pretty much equal in terms of reception and data speed. VZW is probably a better network coast to coast when you are not near a major metro area.

Yeah it would be cheaper to do Sprint. I would hate being on a different plan than my husband though. I am also debating weather I should just cancel my date plan. I am a stay at home mom and mainly got the phone for it's calendar and PDA functions. I really don't "need" the data service. I would love to cancel the data service but Verizon told me that I had to get the data plan. I've heard others say they don't have one with Verizon. If I do get rid of the data plan I would switch carriers. I just don't know what to do. I hate to keep paying for a data plan just so I can have my smartphone.

I wouldn't have a Q without a data plan. if you use any data at all, the charges add up very fast. Beware, MMS (picture messages) also use data, as i read in another thread today, if you don't have a data plan, if you send a normal sized 300KB pic, the data alone would cost you $4.50. it's crazy. plus if you even use the internet a few times a month on it the costs would quickly add up to more than what you pay for the data plan. When i had the Q with Verizon i was told you could do it without the Data. But come on, that's like having a boat and not having water to put it in. Or being in a bar that doesn't serve beer....what's the point. If your hubby is on the same network, switching to sprint or another network would probably cost you more in minutes as you would lose the mobile to mobile minutes..unless you go to the kiddie carrier (t-mobile) and use the "fave 5" plan.

That makes sense. Thanks, I think you just convinced me. I was feeling guilty for spending the extra money on the date plan when I probably don't need it but you are right. In the end it does come up cheaper.
