Default Motorola Q Black

Yet another "Verizon rep blowing smoke up my ass" story, I suppose.

I called a rep a few days ago because my new-every-two date was looming so I just had a couple of basic questions about adding a data plan. I ended up asking what the difference was between the original Q and the Q Black, which is currently $30 more. She claimed it had upgrades and fixes and was an "enhanced" version, without going into detail. Sounded fishy to me, so I do a quick google search to discover what most of you surely already know... the difference is: it's black. The end. Oh, and it comes with a newer firmware, but this can be installed on the original too. Neato.

Sad thing is, I'll probably pay the extra anyway because I like black. I'm a sucker.

Oh and one other annoyance...

The rep told me to definitely buy online because of the online-only discounts, which combined with my new every two would give the best deal over walking into a store ($49 after discounts and MIR.)

So the site shows the retail price, minus $100 discount, minus $50 MIR. So it seemed that indeed with the $100 NET discount, that $50 (or $80 for Black) would be the price.

So as of today, my new-every-two is available. I go back to the site and start going through the "upgrade my phone" steps. I add the Q to the cart, and now it shows ONLY the new every two $100 discount, and nothing else!

So now I'm actually getting LESS of a discount? This won't fly. On top of that, they *FORCE* you into a text/pix plan instead of per-message rate, although I understand you can call and have that removed afterwards. Still a cheesy move by them though.

I will demand all the discounts. Someone in another thread said they walked out of a brick and mortar store with the phone for $50 (all discounts given) so I think I will try that route.

So I've been from store to store and customer service agent to customer service agent. Verizon has a great signal but little else, especially in terms of consistent prices, service, etc.

The best luck will be had by calling them up. Tell them they are offering the phone online for $149.99 and that you would like to do that and use your New-after-2 credit. You'll get the phone for $50. In fact I lost my motorola q and the retail stores offered nothing but the $419 sucker price. I called up and got the $150 over the phone from the sales rep. I don't even hit two years on this contract until October. If the first service rep doesn't want to help you try again and see if you can't get better help. Never hurts to be real nice and let them know you just want to see what they can do for YOU.

Thats my $0.02.

having owned both: pay the $30 for the Black. It looks a lot better, and when you're looking at something so often, might as well look as nice as it can ,no?

In addition, scratches and smudges are mostly transparent with the Black, whereas my Silver already looked beaten up in a matter of days. Add to that, it's rubbery and grippy!

I did try that initially, but I was told "that's the price for a new customer and we can't combine those discounts". I just gave up after that.

I went to a brand new store that opened up around the corner from me, and it was being run by a handful of 20 year olds. I mentioned the $49 thing but this guy acted like somebody that was afraid to lose his job. He wouldn't budge on the pricing and only offered the Q Black for $279 + 50 MIR, going right off his chart. I told them "yeah but I could get it for $229 online right now without a rebate" to which he just said "yeah but then you have to wait to get it." Jeez. I'd rather wait 2 days for the phone than deal with a MIR. So I just walked out and ordered it online yesterday for $229.

At least I knew not to order a minisd from them for ripoff prices. Got a 80x 2GB card from newegg for $25 on its way.

That was the one benefit I got from visiting that store yesterday... I got to hold each one, and noticed the black had that comfy rubbery grip... so that did it for me, otherwise I was going to feel kind of stupid paying $30 extra. I also paid about $8 more to get the hi-speed transcend minisd over the standard. It's chicken feed for the better performance. I had read a user review on newegg who said with the 40x version, music and video skipped on his Q when playing off the card.
