What I'm hearing is the program PDANET will make it work. I ordered my Q yesterday so I should have it tomorrow or wednesday... then I will be trying it.

The term is TETHERING. If you check out the Verizon & software forums you'll see quite a bit written on it. I just wrote a review on PDAnet.

Default VZ access manager

I am not very familiar with PDAnet, just what i have read about it here, but if you have the verizon q then, with it you recieved a cd containing Verizon's version of this type software. And that isn't even a necessary install the access manager software, just install the drivers, and setup a dial-up connection using the phone as the modem. if you need any information on doing this, i am willing to help and i am working on getting together some screen shots of how to do this. i installed the access manager software initially, but t just drug down my computer, so in my playing around i found that it had created a dialup connection that it used. I connected the phone as a modem and tried directly connecting without the access manager software and it worked so much better. I havce since deleted the access software and just use the dialup connection.

As far as I have read, only the original firmware release of the Q allowed direct tethering through DUN. So, I'm not sure how that is working for you, unless you have actually configured an external dialup ISP? Otherwise, the original method worked by dialing #777. But again, that's not *supposed* to work anymore. I'd be curious to see you:

- Verify your software version
- Post shots of config

In addition, you are supposed to pay $15 a month for the "privilege" of tethering. I don't know if they will catch you doing this or not, but it's been pretty well confirmed that PDANet keeps you under the radar. It requires Activesync to be running, but that's hardly a catch. It works great. Well worth the few bucks.

I ran into all kinds of problems with tethering and spent about a half hour on the phone with Verizon tech support sorting it out. I was doing it the "official" way with the VZAccess Manager crapware. The tech support guy ended up having me cut through the shiite and just setup a plain DUN connection dialing #777 (although you do have a username/password combo you need to enter as well) and it worked just fine.

He even implied it would work over bluetooth, too, but I haven't been able to make that work.

He said the big reason for using the VZAccess software was that it automagically updated the roaming rules for data, where the DUN connection doesn't. Apparently a regular and healthy use of *228 on the phone will take care of this.

Granted I do pay the money for the tethering, but attached are a screen shot from my computer showing the properties of the dial up connection and a picture of the about screen from my phone, I have MOL3 installed. This does require the use of the modem-link software on the phone also.

VZAM works for me just fine on USB. It keeps a log of megabyte transfers on disconnect. And yes Bluetooth works great too but slow. I have used it on several BT stacks (Widcomm, Broadcom, MS) without problems, but Apple's keeps timing out on me every few minutes.

I have had it tethered using the cdma dialer software that came with my install disk from an PPC6700 and it worked great with XP. I bought a new laptop with vista on it and the software no longer worked. Bought PDAnet and it is back up. I also used to have it working over bluetooth with xp but it was much slower.

PDAnet is worth the 30 bucks. Less hassels than trying to use DUN. Been using it for about 3 weeks now and no problems. Took me less than 2 min to get it going.
