Default Just paid for VZaccess (tethered modem)

So, I'll give you the skinny on this and let me know what you think.

I'm getting ready to leave home for about 5 months, I will be in an area with decent Verizon service, but very few hotspots for wifi. I will have my Q, but other than checking email on it I'd rather surf the web and do other things via my laptop. No large downloads or anything...

I looked into 2 options.
1-Broadband card
2-Upgrading my plan to use my Q as a modem

The Broadband card was like $15, but $60 per month and a 1 year contract. With the Q, I'm already paying $45/month for "unlimited" internet access, and to add the modem service it is $15 extra/month.

I went with adding the Q as a modem, I hope it works well and since I'm only gone 5 months I can terminate that feature when I return. Plus, it is only $15 extra a month.

My question is, how well does this work? Let's say I have a decent signal, will it be like i'm on dial-up? I just want to browse some forums, maybe watch some youtube and I might have some requirements to utilize FTP programs.

What do you think?

you could look into PDAnet...

for ftp you can get Total Commander (free) it has a ftp client.

It should work well. I would expect DSL speeds if in an EVDO area. I would check it out well before I left to make sure you are up and running.

As RB said most members here buy PDANet and don't go with a tethering plan. Lots of info on that on EQ.

Well, I got it up and running today... took about 10 minutes.

I downloaded the VZ Access Manager from www.vzam.net, and updated my drivers with a download from Motorola, plugged in the phone and it works!

Speed is decent, definitely NOT as fast as highspeed I have here at home, but for working remotely and doing what I need it do it will suffice.

forgot to mention, yesterday at the verizon store the sales rep kept trying to steer me towards the broadband card. "only" $60 a month says he. Much faster than using the Q as a modem... And yes, there is a contract but he suggested if I opt out I could re-coup my termination fee by selling the card on Ebay. What an effing tool. This is why are you peddling phones in a kiosk....lmao

How about doing what's right for the customer? I now have no contact, only pay an extra $15 per month and the speed is really pretty decent.

where is this $35 charge for PDAnet? Not that I'm complaining, but i just downloaded it for free and it works fine. Might have to tell Verizon I don't need that access plan anymore
