Question internet vs pop email

I am currently researching getting a Q and I have a few questions.

I am not really needing to receive emails directly to my phone as I figure I can just go online through my phone to my gmail and yahoo account and do it that way.

Is it necessary to have a data plan in order to go online?

From what I've read so far there would be 2 options for me, a pay as you go plan or a data plan, and I would have to have either of those in order to go online.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Thanks!

I'd just have the gmail account set up as a POP. It will save you time in the long run.

You also use the data plan for checking email via pop3.

You have go go online and check your email manually. With pop3 you don't have to do anything. Now if you don't get any emails you need to read or reply to, then I guess it's not a big deal.

There is one other option - the one I use. Since I also don't need to have email directly sent to my phone, nor do I need constant "at my fingertips" Internet access, I said NO to the data plan and purchased the SpecTec WiFi adapter that fits into the MiniSD socket on the Q. I can get Internet access via WiFi at any open access point and check email or browse the web as necessary. I picked up my card off eBay for $28.

Cheers!

I just got a Q9m.

I didn't get a data plan yet and I'm still debating my options. i like the idea of the wi-fi card. I will have to look into that.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
