Smile Getting a Q next week

Long story short. Im getting a Q from my cousin next week because he wants the new voyager coming out.

He has nothing but the phone and charger what will I need to use the phone properly? I know it comes with software and a USB cord...where can I get these?

I will be getting unlimited internet and tethering the phone to my laptop. Will I just need a mobile office kit for this?

I dont know what software version the phone has...I can update it myself instead of taking it to a verizon store correct?

all input is welcome...im new to smartphones and want as much information as I can get before jumping into this phone.

So I need Microsoft ActiceSync software and the cable...where can I get a cable for the Q?

Will the cable that comes with the office kit work with the Microsoft ActiceSync?

Nah you don't need to buy no stinkin' Office Essentials kit. Just go to any comp usa and get a mini-usb to standard USB cable for $4 bucks or so and that's all you need. Download ActiveSync 4.5 if on XP, or WMDC if on Vista for synching files and email. For tethering to laptop go to www.vzam.net and download the appropriate USB driver (xp or vista) and optionally VZW Acess Manager. Dont really need that, you can use the standard windows modem handlers once the drivers are installed if you prefer.

Yeah dima is right, you don't need to get that Office Kitcrapo...lol
Just that miniUSB to USB cable he mentioned, and you'd be better off getting the updated Motorola Q drivers from the Motorola website itself, rather than using the disc provided to you by Verizon.

Without making this post ridiculously long about what the Q can do....here's some hints..

*TCPMP to play your movies on...free
*PocketDivxEncoder to conver your DVDs top AVIs so you can play them on your Q...free
*PDANet to tether your laptop to your Q....$34 one time fee rather than $15 per month
*PocketNesterPlus to be able to play gameboy like NES games opn your Q...free
*OperaMini using the JBED Midlet Manager as a complimentary program with PIE to surf the web....free

That should get you going...search, research, and be amazed at what our Qs can do!!!!!!!!

Oh BTW, have you gotten a MiniSD card yet? Newegg.com has some great Kingston 2 GB cards for only abut $15 bucks if I remember right from when I got it...

nice! you guys answered half my questions already!

Im new to this so half of what you wrote is alien to me. So please be patient with me as I will have lots more questions.

like this question...

*PDANet to tether your laptop to your Q- So this eliminates that crappy $15 a month fee verizon wants to charge that made absolutely no sense to me. very nice. where can I get this at?

...and the phone im getting has a MiniSD card already in it. Im not sure how big it is but I think it just has some music on it.

I am getting the phone as a gift from my cousin and he no longer has the cord. Thats why I was asking where I could get one. If I read correct the mini-usb to standard USB cord is all I need to connect the Q to my laptop and also tether to it?

Yes that would be what PDANet replaces. You can get it from here ... PDANet . It can be used for a free trial at first.

You would need at least a 1 Gig card to fit music and maybe a 500 MB AVI movie onto. 2 GB card would be even better, then you can have 1 Gig for music & software, and 1 gig for videos...
And yes, you can put almost all of your added softwares on your SD Card.

Yes, the miniUSB to USB cable is for the connection to the laptop thru Active Sync 'and' to tether as a modem. Active Sync is great because with it connected to your PC you will be able to explore all its folder just like you would 'My Computer' on your computer.

BTW, if you use this forums search function as has been suggested to you, you'll be pleasantly surprised as to all the wealth of info that is readily available!!... It may even give you the other half of the answers you seek...
But by all means, you're welcome to ask any questions you'd like and we'll try to answer it or atleast point you in the right direction...

Welcome aboard...

You don't really need to "buy" any software, you can go to Motorola's site to snatch the needed drivers and such... You can go to Windows and snatch ActiveSynch... and well, the internet is a good source for just about EVERYTHING ELSE for free...

not that I promote anything wrong... I'm just telling you what your "options" are... LOL

PdaNet is a wonderful program though... if you tether... just don't bust that 5GB Unlimited "limit"... Verizon CAN AND WILL drop that ass... LOL

I think that 86mcss already now knows that there's no need to buy anything, except the mini-USB to USB cable and maybe PDANet.

As for the comment about the 5 GB limit and that Verizon would drop anyone who goes over....
First of all, if you only knew how fricking hard it is to even get to 2 GBs of usage in a month, then you'd know that it isn't really too much of a concern.
Secondly, I seriously doubt that Verizon would give up anyones monthly payments just because...That would be basically idiotic of them if they did so.

This 'You'll get dropped if you go over the 5 GB limit' almost amounts to urban myth. So doubt 86mcss or I need to be concerned at all.
