And I guess some need to stream in their movies, TV shows or something, but I have MCE PCs and can get everything and anything pretty much converted to MPG4 and transfer it to my SD card and watch it from there.
No need to be streaming videos on my Q. I really don't think too many are even getting that close to 5 GBs anyways.
I may ask Verizon directly myself, and get them to offer up any excuse for this 5 GB limit talk on their 'Unlimited Data Plan' |
In this regard, I only know what I read. In that regard, you may want to check out the appropriate thread in the SlingBox forum. There have been extensive dialogue there. Those guys have analyzed the bitrates, etc. Because streaming video uses up so much bandwith, they are always concerned about the 5 GB limit.
For example, I kind of remember that if you streamed live TV for 8 hours a day (rather preposterous, I admit), you would go over 5 GB per month. And there have been guys who have been summarily dropped from the so-called unlimited data plan by VZW.
I also remember somebody giving the sage advice of
never ask VZW about that provision in the terms of service. Of course, you never really know who knows what in these forums, but that advice seems reasonable to me.
All I was trying to get across here, for what it's worth, is that with VZW unlimited data service (a pretty good over all service because, computer or not, we do need the Q and VZW service for actually
telephoning) you just have to be careful and vigilent with the amount of data you stream.
I have virtually all the television channels that are available with Directv, including NFL Sunday ticket and MLB and all the movie plans -- and HD DVR -- so, I am always thinking in terms of watching that way via SlingBox -- if I'm waiting for a delayed flight -- which happens more and more lately -- in some airport or other.
Although I now have a 2GB SD card (which I bought for practically nothing), I admit I don't know at this point how to transfer stuff to it, but I don't know if I ever will in light of the aforesaid. I don't download music, but I do listen to live XM radio music through Directv/SlingBox in "audio only" to cut down the bitrate. I don't take pictures with the Q; I have a real camera for that!
With the SD card, I was thinking more in terms of overloading the Q with perhaps too much software because there are so many neat programs out there that help make the Q a more pleasing and efficient experience.
