Yes, I want EV-DO, but I want it cheaper.

I don't expect it to be free, but I expect it to be reasonable and I don't really think $45 is. (Of course, I'm speaking as a consumer here; I haven't seen Veriizon's cost to build out the EV-DO network.)
Also, what about people who only have 1xRTT service? If they ask for unlimited data, I bet Verizon happily charges them $45, too.

What poll was that? If it asked, "What is a fair price -- $45 per month, $60 per month, $80 per month, etc.?" then I'm not surprised that $45 was chosen.

Come on, sometimes complaining makes us feel good.
And, while nobody can obviously force a data plan on you, I have heard stories about reps saying they couldn't sell the Q without one. So a gullible consumer might be "forced" into paying for one. Of course, that is just as likely due to poor training of the reps as it is to reps trying to boost their commission (if they get paid by commission).
