I believe the speed that you can surf the internet on your phone (data usage). With EV-DO (Ev) being the faster one (broadband like).

We are slowly moving to EV-DO in my area and have a tower 6 miles away so my phone switched back and forth. I've not been able to run a data stream on EV-DO to see if it really faster than 1x. They say EV-Do is faster than 1x. I wonder if you can really know the difference. Making the change will not effect the way you get calls or txt messages. It just effects those who collect data streams.

I know with regular phones, Ev lets you know that you are in an area, if your phone is capable, where you can get Vcast. I would imagine it would allow for easier data downloads than 1x. It probably allows for more users to hit the network for data without overloading the system, and bogging down the network.

Default EvDO/1xRTT

Hi I'm a Technician at VZW...I'll shed a little light for y'all...

EvDO is the broadband speeds on all data: aircards, tethered, and PDA connections (internet explorer).

1xRTT is the base network for internet. You can connect but speeds are faster than dial up but not near as fast as the broadband.

True, you do have to have EvDO coverage to get VCAST connections.

Hope this helps.

To put numbers behind the symbols, when you are in a 1x area and downloading, you'll get between 7 KB/s - 14 KB/s (~ 56-115 kbps) download speeds. When you are in EV-DO, you'll get anywhere between 50KB/s to 120KB/s (400kbps - 960Mbps) -- quite the difference.
