The VZW store I referred to is the actual, full-fledged VZW. I encountered this problem a few months ago when my wife wanted to upgrade her phone with her "new every 2." They would start reducing the price from the manufacturer's price ($300+). My understanding is that any discounts should be taken off of the "new customer price" (~200). That would bring the phone to around $100 after 2 sets of $50 rebates.
What do you think? What do I need to do/say to make this happen?
