I just switched back to my Q today with Verizon since I am passing my 'regular' phone off to a family member. I called customer service to do the equipment switch and they asked me if I wanted to block the data. I said yes since all I need this for is phone/text/calendar. I have tested IE and get a message telling me that this service is not available. So the data block truly does work. No needing to hack the registry. Hope this helps!

I don't think that anybody doubted the data block would work. However, the registry hack serves two purposes.

First, it allows you to access data when you want to, without worrying about a program doing it accidentally (or on its own).

Second, it allows MMS to still function on the Q, which seems to use data unlike most "dumb" phones where it uses minutes. If you have time, try sending and receiving a picture message and tell us what happens.

The Pay as You Go plan is billed seperate. And even with the data block you still have a data plan, the pay as you go plan, your just blocking yourself from using it.
I see so many people saying so and so got one without a data plan and that confusion comes from people calling the pay as you go plan "no data plan" so by calling it your own name your adding more confusion.

To be more specific, since you seem to want to be pedantic about it, there's no monthly cost for pay-as-you-go, so many people refer to that as having "no plan" (because plans are things you get charged for). You're technically correct that you do have a plan, but I suggest getting used to people saying "no data plan" and realizing what they mean. I'm a big stickler for technical accuracy (as you may have noticed

MMS does not function with the data block on the Q. I get a message telling me that the message could not be sent and another telling me to check my login credentials (since the phone has to have a 3G account linked with Verizon).

But thats what I'm trying to say, its not just arguing semantics. If you say "no data plan" then people are going to try to buy one without a data plan and we'll get more questions like "why can't I buy without a data plan". You have to have a data plan, you can't get a Q without a data plan. So you get the pay as you data plan and then apply a data block. A data block is not a data plan, its simply preventing you from using your data plan. So when you say "no data plan" your technically wrong. Go over to some place like howard forums where that question comes up three times a day. When people call up Verizon to order it they are going to have to use Verizon's terms. So telling them to say they want "no data plan" is just going to confuse the Verizon rep who is going to say they can't get one with no data plan. You have to use their terms.
remember you also don't need the data block on Verizons end, you could do the password regedit one the phone to prevent you from accidently using the data function.

not to be mean or rude. or anything. why get the motorola q or motorola qm and not get the data plan. its a must need with that phone. with so much capabilities the phone has. its like buying a computer with out the internet. but thats my opinion. its a must need. plus with the data plan it makes ur with the phone + data plan its only like 30 something a month. its pretty cheap. to get the full capabilites of the windows mobile operating system. u need to have the data plan. hell u can even connect to ur pc from ur motorola q. but u need a data plan.

You can do planty with the Q without using the data plan. Its Calendar and contacts work fine. Keeping my photo albums works fine.
I look at it like this, I have the internet at home, why should I have to pay a second time just to use it on the Q, does you ISP charge you per computer, or do you pay once and then share it in the whole house?
