Default Adios, Verizon!

Sorry for the rant here:

My 1 year contract with Verizon recently ran out and I had been deciding which phone to purchase, either the Q or the BlackJack.

After seeing on the website that -for a new customer- the Q was $199 w/ a two year contract plus ANOTHER $50 mail-in rebate (making it $150), I was ready to pull the trigger and get the black version of it. The BJ is a better phone IMO, but I've always been satisfied with Verizon.

However, after I signed into my account online, they only offered the phone w/ a two year deal for existing customers for $299, which is more than $150 differential.

I called customer support and, after being transferred SEVEN TIMES, they told me that the online deal was for new customers only. Such BS. They were incredibly rude to me and acted as if I was honored by the availability of a year-old smartphone for 300.

I can now get a BlackJack half as cheap with a one year plan on Cingular (not crazy about them, but whatever).

I know this seems petty, but the way they handled my questioning was ridiculous.

Not sure what they are charging for it, but Sprint is now offering the Q if you feel like going with the Q. I'm sure the BlackJack is a great phone, it looks pretty sexy, and CNET seemed to like it... but I think the battle-tested (and updated) Black-Q has the edge. Good luck with whatever you choose!

I recently upgraded to the Q from a Razr with Verizon. Somehow, i qualified for the every 2 plan even though i got the Razr for free less than 1 yr. ago with Verizon. I went to the store to upgrade and to my surprise, the Q came out to costing me $100 due to the discounts, plus a $100 mail-in-rebate. So the point to my story is that i somehow manged to get the Q for FREE. Not sure how it worked out that way and the sales rep didn't understand either, but his boss verified it and it went through.

i did approx the same thing and paid $100 for the Q at verizon during a 2 year upgrade. If I had signed up for unlimited data at the same time, I think the Q would have been free.

I had a very similar experience to yours. I've had tons of issues with my Treo 700w. Since I'm registered on My Accounts, and am eligible for yearly upgrades, I wanted to upgrade to the Black Q.

Since the Black Q was an online exclusive, I tried upgrading via the website. I too got the $299 price. No rebates were displayed. After a couple calls to different CSRs, this is what I learned.

1. The $100 instant rebate is for new customers who sign up for a 2 year agreement with an unlimited data.

2. There is a $50 mail-in rebate that comes with the Black Q ($100 for the Silver Q).

However, since I was signing a new 2 year agreement, I wanted the $100 instant rebate as well. The first couple CSRs were not helpful. But I eventually found a CSR who was more than willing to help. He processed my order for the Black Q for $299 w/ free overnight shipping. He then credited my account $150 to account for the rebates.

I guess the moral of the story is that some CSRs are more helpful than others. If you like Verizon service, then try and call customer service again. You'll eventually find someone who can help you and get you the Black Q for $149.

Default "Instant Rebate"

That "instant rebate" line on the Web site is misleading. I don't believe you're getting the rebate for the Q itself; you have to sign up for an unlimited data plan.

If you're an existing customer (like I was when I got my Q), have them add the unlimited data plan to your account and ask for the Advanced Devices $100 rebate.

I know everyone wants to get the best price on their handsets, just use good sense. Is it worth saving $150 or so to jump to another provider? If they can provide you good service AND have a device you like, then go for it. Don't go just for the device and a little spite--you'll probably wish you didn't when that great device has no service.

Yes, but the problem is that if you're a current customer who already has unlimited data, VZW doesn't want to give you the $100 rebate. But as I mentioned earlier, it is possible to have a CSR credit your account for that amount.

That makes sense, but I didn't see Avonalliv say that he had any kind of data plan already.

That's good to know.
