Although it is technically possible, you are violating your agreement with USCC by using the phone as a tethered modem. What the penalties are I don't know.

When I got my Q, I asked the sales rep about this specifically, because I'd known from my previous V3m that it was a no-no. He confirmed that US Cellular's rules had not changed with the Q, and that it still was verboten. Since then, that info has been confirmed by several support techs at US cellular, so my advice would be to proceed with the understanding that you could be penalized for your activity.

Yeah, rasmith3530 is right. It is against the tethered modem policy to tether with any device. When it's heavily used on a regular phone they usually just pull easyedge off the line and memo the account saying they can't have easyedge because they were tethering. I haven't seen a case specific to the Q yet. It would be a weird situation because the data package is required in order to have a Q. They would likely warn you first, but maybe not.

The word used was "allow". And we don't allow tethered usage.

Does Us Cellular just try to piss off it's customer base on purpose?

On what do you base that? Because we've chosen to say no to something?

USCC isn't a company that runs at the bleeding edge of technology. Our CEO, Jack Rooney, has been quoted many a time as admitting that and even stating it's part of our strategy. We're not interested in trying to "out-Sprint" Sprint's network, or to "out-Verizon" Verizon's service offerings.

Tethered usage has an effect on our overal network performance that isn't something we feel we can support while still providing the best possible customer experience. So we don't support it at all.

It sounds like this may surprise you, but you can have a customer's best interests at heart and still say no to that customer.

Strategy, yes but at what cost?

Living in Maine certainly has it's major disadvantages. Mostof the cell companies really could give a rats' ass about providing any sort of speedy service to their customer base (Verizon and AT&T certainly included)

All I see from the cell companies currently in Maine is let's bleed the population dry and offer very limited services since Maine is very much a "podunk state"

That is the impression I have felt from company to company (I have tried and hated them all)

Someday, a cell company will have the balls to step up to the plate and give Mainers that same type of network enjoyed by those who congregate in larger cities.

All the while, I continue to pay over $200 a month for a family plan with five lines which includes $65 in data plans (my wife has a blackberry, I have the Q)

US Cellular currently is the lesser of several evils.

Well, if we're not looking to become a national carrier (and we aren't under Jack Rooney), then it may well be a cost we'll never encounter.

But I don't know, frankly. I'm a Blackberry support rep. Not a business manager.

And I would disagree that we're an evil at all. See, you've got certain things you want from a carrier, and that's absolutely legitimate and your right as a consumer. But if those needs represent a consumer we're not about serving, does that make us wrong or evil?

You could make a case for that, probably. But I'd disagree that it's automatically so.
