| I warn you in advance, like most of the hacks to get GPS working with other providers, this is gonna be a DIRTY HACK... it will work, but I may end up doing a hard reset or two before I figure out how to not break the rest of the phone while doing it... I'm glad I have two of these phones, while mine is working with the Holux, I'll hack my wife's instead of breaking mine repeatedly. =) |

| Um....I may wait. Time is limited and if I have to reinstall everything - that could indeed be ....ugly. |

| US Cellular's Stand on GPS I'm not sure I believe any of this myself, I just thought I would share my experience.
Having had way too much free time on my hands this afternoon, I spent a lot of time on the phone about this issue. I spoke with three entities, US Cellular, Motorola, and Microsoft. If I'm posting any redundant information, please forgive me as I haven't seen any of it yet, but it may be stuff everybody already knows. US Cellular's regular technical support at first said that any third party GPS software should work with the phone. When told that it doesn't and I asked if they had locked the hardware, they advised me they have not locked or disabled any features of the phone, and if I was having issues with the internal hardware not working, I should speak with Motorola.
I then spoke with a tech rep at Motorola who said that the functionality should be there and either US Cellular locked the phone or that I had a faulty handset and should talk to US Cellular about replacing it with one that functions correctly.
I then called US Cellular back, got placed on hold for 35 minutes waiting to talk to the "Data Stream Technical Support" who are supposed to be the very top level of know-it-all in the US Cellular tech chain. I was advised by one of their representatives that the problem is not due to any "locking" (the qoutes are his, he said it with such distaste) on the part of US Cellular, rather, due to the fact that the Q9C uses A-GPS, Windows Mobile is not able to convert the signal from a CDMA system to get an initial tower lock and initialize the GPS hardware. He said to call Microsoft.
So I called Microsoft. They told me that was the most ridiculous thing they ever heard and that Windows will work with any hardware installed by the manufacturer. (Which evidently means Windows Mobile is different from every other version of windows ever created, cause the full versions sure don't always) They referred me back to Motorola and US Cellular.
At this point I got dizzy from the gigantic circle of blame.
It got me nowhere and everybody claims that their product works perfectly and it's somebody else's fault. The only really interesting part was the fact that while the salesman who sold me the phone told me that the GPS on my phone would work flawlessly (half the reason I bought a 400 dollar phone before I was eligible so I didn't have to buy a separate GPS receiver) their own tech support, if you go high enough, will tell you that it won't, it never will, and they don't plan on fixing it or doing anything about it.
I think at the end of my contract I might take my phone and go elsewhere for service. |

| Well, thanks for working on it. I've heard most of those arguements before. I'm going to copy you rpost over to the HoFo/USCC/MotoQ thread - several of those folks are very knowledgeable. |

I had the very same conversations with US Cellular and Motorola. Personally, I think they are both full of it, and they are not allowed to tell you the phone is locked or in any way "broken" in function. The funny thing about what US Cellular says is that the other providers phones have GPS and the aGPS needs to be activated... Somehow, US Cellular got the reject phones that have aGPS active and no standard GPS?? I seriously doubt that, and it seems that it's all about registry entries and drivers, so like I said before, I need someone with a Verizon phone, an AT&T phone, and any other providers who have the Q9c to send me a backup of their registry and drivers so I can hack these USCC phones. |

| Might be applicable...... Not sure if this applies or not, I found it on the Motodev site.....
Can I use the Microsoft GPS APIs with the Motorola Q device?
INTRODUCTION:
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This utilizes a constellation of at least 24 Medium Earth Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals. The system enables a GPS receiver to determine its location, speed, direction, and time.
RESOLUTION:
Currently Motorola Smartphones MOTO Q 9h and MOTO Q 9c are equipped with a GPS receiver. You can use Microsoft GPS APIs if the following registry key values are present: For the MOTO Q 9c : [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver]
"IsEnabled"=dword:00000001. For the MOTO Q 9h: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\LCAService
CONCLUSION:
All Motorola Q family phones includes the intermediate driver regardless of the GPS chip existence. To use Microsoft's GPS APIs, please ensure the above registry keys and values are present on your phone.
Unfortunately, I know nothing about registry editing to give it a try myself....... |

My registry values are already set as above on my USCC Q9c. No joy. |

| I couldn't find any registry settings at all under the GPS intermediate driver, but I felt I was too ignorant to start trying to create some. |
