The other issue is that every time the phone searches for data and fails it causes an error on the network...then engineers have to troubleshoot when in fact there really isn't a problem, it can end up costing USCC way more money than your $24.95/month is worth.

Ok I understand this might be an issue with a blackberry or a Moto Q.... Is there another smartphone I can buy that works well as a cell phone and also had an address book and calendar (I can sync with my desktop)? I really just want a phone that I can also use for a couple other things without carrying my pda plus a phone! I don't need Email 24/7 so there's no need to pay another $25 per month to read junk mail!

There's got to be a device out there.... or if there isn't one: 'Hello'!!! Here's a market that needs filling!

The problem is not that there's an unfilled market for the device, the problem is that it is up to the carrier whether or not to offer the device on a voice-only basis.

True, I just wouldn't call the Voyager or enV a "smartphone" but perhaps that is what jmac should be looking into

I agree....
smartphone may not be a viable option at this time for him.

Anyone from the cell companies reading this forum: There are customers just waiting for a chance to buy and sign-on for a smart phone (device) with voice only! I found a lot of people asking the question online but no one has really come up with an answer yet.

Why should I have to threaten cancellation to get *service* from my cell carrier? That's not good customer service... in any field.

Anyone (in a position to make plan changes) listening out there?

carriers classify smartphones as business phones so they follow different rules/ plans than standard phones. basically it allows carriers to make even more money off of us. I aways said either data prices have to come down, or dumb phones have to incorporate better pim apps.

My old Nokia was awesome - I could install Opera Mini on it even (if you wanted to pay for the less expensive easyedge). It sync'd w/ my home computer too ... it's the Nokia 6255i ... probably would have to search ebay b/c stores don't have it anymore. I was able to download Diego software & do some hacks on it too to use mp3 as ringtones, etc.. It didn't have all the same cool programs as I've found for my smartphone, but I've found that most of what I've installed on my Q is the same things that came on my Nokia (stopwatch, notepad, etc) ... otherwise programs I've installed have been system tools to clean up the junk you get from having data service / internet.

Yeah I had the Nokia 6265i (slider) and it was pretty damn sweet, I did many of the same things that you did and you could sync certain calendars with using Nokia PC Suite
