Question Why does Sprint Moto Q have GPS enable?

So why does Sprint's Moto Q have GPS that you can switch off "911 only" to "Location On"? But then when you do try programs like Google Maps, Maps for PDA, and Virtual Earth Mobile, they do not see this as a GPS. I can not find any information in the instruction manual regarding the GPS option. (I am aware an additional GPS Blue Tooth device may be used....)

Thoughts?

when the Q says its GPS enabled what it means is that if you have an emergency 911 operators can locate you based on the signal your phone is putting out...

according to my telenav rep they are working on getting a version of telenav up and running for the Q which should work great for anyone wanting GPS on their Q...once he lets me know its available I will make a post about it.

Interesting! I hope they get it working soon. Too bad there isn't a way to utilize the Moto Q's GPS for free! ;)

That would be great. Had that on my krzr and it was very accurate. I don't want to spend money on GPS hardware & software, plus telenav would look great on large Q screen. Let us know of any updates.

I wonder if its actually GPS or positioning based on cell phone towers, still, would be a great feature to have "built in".

Don't quote me on this, but I believe when you are in "911 only", ONLY a 911 operator can locate you using GPS (if they have the right equipment). With the "Location On", only authorized people can locate your phone. An example would be parents who want to be able to find where their kids are, you can subscribe to the 'Locator Service' and you can pinpoint the phone to within 100 feet of it's location.
Alot of people have said they think it drains their battery if it's 'on', I've been told that it doesn't and haven't experienced any problem with leaving mine on.
Perhaps my wife is tracking me...........shutting off GPS at this time.

Yeah, reminds me of the tv commercial for I think T-Mobile, "Where you at?", the wife says, "...yeah I know where your at!" And the husband is with another women in a nice pool.

Leave it to Sprint to charge you another per month fee to do something practical and built into your phone already! Ahhh....

Thanks for the info!

I'd be happy to pay $10/month, instead of having to buy $100-$200 gps receiver hardware & more $$ on gps software. I know there are freebies but are they really any good at live navigation?
