The Q doesn't use ActiveSync to share the Q's internet. You must install a driver on your computer for this to work. Read it somewhere in the CD that came with my Sprint Moto Q.

I found the drivers on Motorola web-site.

Unzip the files and put in a directory. When you use the modem link, mine asked me if i wanted to let windows find the driver or specify a location. I pointed to my temporary unzip folder, and it installed.

Once I activated the modem link on the q, active sync on my pc disconnected, and a windows xp balloon told me the q modem was running. I was on the internet then.

When you disconnect the modem link, active sync turned back on.

Hope this helps someone. Maybe this wasn't anyones question...

BTW - I have the $15 plan EV plan from sprint.

Foxmcf, so basically you are saying you paid for $15/month data plan from sprint and that covers using your phone as modem with the one time charge of PDAnet? I just got my q 2 days ago and I'm trying to decide wether I should go with time warner cable ($40/month) or use my Q as a modem. BTW is using your q as a modem pretty fast (compared to DSL or cable)? Thanks guys.

Okay, so I researched it a little and here is my understanding with using the q as a modem on sprint:
1) all you need is to purchase PDAnet (one time charge of $34)
2) Have the sprint Power Vision plan ($15/mo)
3) Sprint doesn't keep a limit on your data usage and this is kosher?

If $15/mo is the only charge (with the one time charge for pdanet) then I will definitely do this instead of getting a dsl/cable modem service. Does this sound correct to anyone? Thanks.

Yes and No. I pay $15 for the unlimited data. I don't use PDAnet. One of my neighbors works for sprint as a sales rep. He explained that I shouldn't be able to connect my phone to computer without paying the $40 or whatever it is. He said to consider it a good mistake for me, but to be careful that I don't start using it all the time, otherwise Sprint could terminate my account as somewhere it talks about that in the fine-print.

I don't plan on using it that much anyway. It's fast, but not as fast as my Roadrunner Cable-modem. I did a speed test at 900 kb a minute. Thats much faster than dial-up.

lahoria,

Shortly after posting this, I was not able to get on-line or view web-pages. I've since then Purchased PdaNet and have been very happy. I didn't have time to waste figuring out what was wrong so took the plunge and purchased a license after using the trial to make sure it worked.

Sorry I don't have any help.

I just want to say thanks to everyone in this thread. I'm a new user to cell phones in general, let alone a Moto Q.. so this was a nice learning experience for me.

Anyway, maybe I have missed it somewhere along the lines, but does anyone know if this is a breach of Sprint's contract? I have the $15 unlimited data plan. I wouldn't mind downloading quite a bit, but I don't have to. I can keep the bandwidth usage at a minimum, but I'd sure love to take my laptop anywhere and download until my heart's content.

Need Help Someone Have Mercy On My "sprint Abused" Soul!!!!!

Uh hi everyone.... So I've been soooooo frustrated with Sprint. Last night I came to find out that they have CHARGING UP A STORM on my bill. When I first bought the Q, I SPECIFICALLY signed up for the $15 unlimited per month. Come to find out MONTHS LATER that somehow they removed this plan, perhaps when I made changes on my plan like upgrade to 1000 text for $10 (which I also came to find out last night that they place UNLIMITED for $15 instead). Anyway, make a long story short, I found out that I was paying like 5 cents per Kb (whatever) for internet service and this is why my bill was being charged like $35 extra a month. OKAY, just wanted to get that out of the way.... (I am SOOOO UNHAPPY WITH SPRINT, SOOO MANY ISSUES, but it's like a BAD MARRIAGE I haven't gotten out of when I KNOW I SHOULD!!!)

This is all leading me to this one issue... I DON'T WANT TO GIVE THEM ANY MORE OF MY $$$$!!! First question, where do I download PDA.net from??? And am I correct in saying that if I download this onto my Q, I can use my phone as a modem for my laptop WITHOUT PAYING THE $40 to "moneysucking til you're dry" SPRINT??? Are all these info on this thread up to date???? Thanks a TON, GUYS! And sorry for the vicious venting....

Hail!

Yes, PDANet allows you to use your Q as a modem without paying Sprint a monthly fee. JuneFabrics makes the program and you can download a trial from their website (or a search will yield other options as well).

As near as I can tell, those who've found success with PDANet are up to date.

So, take a break, have some iced tea or something, and when you're ready d/l the proggy and have fun!

Best,
.
