I've been reading all of the great info here on Everything Q, but I'm still struggling with a very basic question. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Here's the deal: I have a Motorola Q with service from Verizon, including an "unlimited" data plan. I am not paying any special monthly fees for tethering or anything like that. Ideally, I'd like to use my Q to connect my Windows XP laptop to the Internet occasionally for web surfing and such -- not major file transfers, etc. By paying a one time fee of $30 or so to purchase PDAnet, will I have the ability to do this without paying any special monthly fees to VZW?

It is my understanding that about 8 months ago, some users found out how to do the above without PDAnet. Shortly thereafter, Verizon came in and disabled that option, asking users that want to use their Q as an Internet access point for laptops/desktops to pay a monthly fee (I think this is often referenced as "BBA" but I am not sure -- y'all use too many acronyms here! I also do not understand where "ModemLink," which came with my phone, fits in). This situation left users with a choice: pony up the monthly fee to VZW or find another way to facilitate the Q as an access point option.

That's where PDAnet comes in, or so I understand: for a one time fee you can get the software needed to make this happen *without* monthly fees. I further understand that users that run up ridiculous amounts of bandwidth (5GB/month sustained or 10GB in a single month) with PDAnet will likely get booted by VZW.

Do I have this right? Are there other options I'm not thinking of? Thanks again for your help.

P.S. the Q FAQ document (here: http://www.everythingq.com/kb/how-i-...-q-as-a-modem/) should be updated to reflect the *current* state of affairs on this question. These forums are great, but a consequence of older threads remaining available is that outo fo date information remains in the open in a confusing and in some cases dangerous fashion.

I am also having problems using my phone as a modem. I pay the $39/mo for the service and I just can't figure out how to make it work. I have activesync on, I plug in my phone, the connection shows it is there, but when I try to open a web page, nada.... is there something I should be doing on the phone? is there anything I should open on the laptop?

I know my internet works, when I switch to my WIFI, all is good. I even have all firewalls off and still I just get page not found when on the Q.

What am I missing?

Yes, I opened the modem link on the Q, no matter what I tried, nothing. I removed the sprint software from my computer, downloaded pdanet to try it and poof, it works. Now to call sprint and tell them to take the modem thing off of my bill.

I wish you guys luck in sorting that out -- sure wish I could help. Gr8wing, one thing to consider is the PDAnet application, which works great -- but it does cost $35 (after a 7 day trial period).

One thing to consider when posting that is routinely ignored around here, and to the significant detriment of the discussion, is being very specific in your terminology. People are using terms in a way that makes it very hard to know what they are saying or what they are asking about, and that's not a good thing.

For instance, gr8wing, you said "I am also having problems using my phone as a modem. I pay the $39/mo for the service." Sentences that include this many nonspecific terms basically make it impossible to give meaningful answers. Here's why:

1.) You don't say who your provider is, so it is hard to say what rules and conditions may come along with the way you use your Q.

2.) You don't say what "the service" is -- the $39/month unlimited data plan (Verizon), a $39/month surcharge for using your Q as a modem, some other $39/month fee, perhaps you're in Canada, etc. The more specific you are, the more people will be able to help.

3.) Are you trying to use your phone as a modem (e.g. as a traditional phone modem to dial in to an ISP like Earthlink) or as a broadband access point (e.g. high speed using the Q's data plan)? Your terminology makes it difficult for people to know which.

My point isn't to pick on gr8wing, but rather to make a general point about this forum. For new readers, it is damn near impossible to understand what is going on in many of the conversations because people are not using clearly-defined terminology. For a universe as complex as the Motorola Q (with all its registry hacks, applications, connections, and such), it just makes sense to use complex terminology.

I agree...perhaps everyone should mention Sprint or VZW as a minimum in their signature? Whaddaya think?
