Default Sprint's evdo

Are there any settings I have to change to get the full features of evdo because I get really slow speeds even though it's all orange around my area on the coverage map.

Signal strength plays a role in your speeds and the map probably doesn't take
into considerations small obstacles that may partially shield a small area of
maybe 1/4 mile or less.
A bit more info please...
Does the phone display that you are on EV and not 1x in the iconbar?
What is your signal strength?
Is it an everywhere problem or just in certain areas?

My signal strength is really low basically everywhere I go and even if it goes to like 4 bars it will go back down to like 2 or one in a few seconds.

1 or 2 bars is definitely at the very least a hindrance.
Does the phone display the EV incon or 1x?
Do you have any other phones on the same network that you can compare
signals with? That is to say if you put your Q next to another phone on the
same network is the signal pretty much the same on both phones, or is one
at 4 bars and the Q at 1? If it's the latter possibly there may be a problem
with the phone if your supposed to be in a good coverage area (usually less
then 2 miles from the tower) - a trip to the service center might be in
order. You could also drive/walk/astral project near to your local tower
and see if you can get a rock solid 4 bars and a marked improvement.
I usually get in the range of 400-500kbs with a good 2 bars, at 4 bars
it really gets cookin - usually near 1000kbs.

You can enter this addy in your phone browser and get a rough idea of your speeds -

Yeah my sprint q and the lg fusic for the sprint both have the same signal.
And yes it displays EV. I have only seen 1X on my phone once. Is it true that sprint's signal is somewhat inconsistent or is that only for me?

It's not just for you....
All carriers have some inconsistency with coverage especially the further you
get from the tower or when you go into shielded buildings or places. Based on
your description it sounds like you just have poor signal reception and thats
what is giving you slow speeds. It never hurts to let the service center check
your phone to make sure tho... or perhaps try what n99hockey suggested.

The first two weeks on the q was unimpressive. It was slower on line then my old treo 600. Then all of the sudden it seemed like something opened up and the evdo kicked in.
