you make it sound like an either/or deal. one...the Q isn't a $600 WM phone. It's a smartphone that's about half that. And many, including myself don't want the brick/mini brick form factor of all the WM6 devices.
two...you offer the upgrade since the competition is offering the upgrade, and you don't want to lose customers to the Q9 or the Dash & Blackjack that will be getting the upgrade. And even if Sprint does the upgrade, many of those same people will upgrade to the new version a year or so from now because they'll most likely be in an upgrade status and will upgrade to get the new Q with all the improved features. Some will just do it because they have upgrade-itis.
I'd bet money if they don't, someone will leak the ROM and people will upgrade their phones anyway. It works. Might as well make $20k or so by charging a small upgrade fee.
