I can understand them wanting to sell more phones, but I think the only new phone for smartphone owners will be the HTC S720 that should be out later in the year (Alltel already has it in Canada), and that is a slider phone. Being it's a different form factor, it won't necessarily cater to the same crowd (similar to the i500/treo when they were both out). From reading up about the Q and the new Q9, I don't think the Q9 will be coming to CDMA for quite some time. So if there's really nothing new to upgrade to, it'd be in Sprint's best interests to update the current Q. It won't detract from people buying the new one when it's released. Improved layout and case, faster processor, more memory along with a few other things will be enough to entice people to upgrade. Just look at the Treo 600-650-700 progression. Nothing groundbreaking in that progression outside of EVDO, and many people upgraded.
They've done a great job at updating it so far. Why ruin it? If I wasn't married to Sprint because of work and the cheap unlimited EVDO, I'd run to Cingular in a heartbeat for a Q9 if Sprint chose not to put WM6 on it. The Dash is getting the upgrade, and Motorola has said nothing about a CDMA version of the Q9. It just makes sense. Update to WM6. And the Q9 should be running on ATT's HSDPA network so it's speed would be even better than Sprint and Verizon.
I just want a great (not good) reason to leave my palm OS. That would be it, along with threaded SMS which I hope would be possible on the WM6 version via built in or third party.
Again, just my outsider's two cent opinion.

I wont be suprised if the update is not made available, as they want to sell new phones, but it is possible and clearly works. |
