Question Sprint Roaming Policy - 50%?

I purchased my new Q mainly because of the roaming capability, enabling me to select when to roam and when to hang onto a Sprint network only. My Treo 650 did have this function as it selected on its own unreliably.

Now that I’m roaming (bad reception both in my office and at home) I am concerned about my usage. Sprint assured me that my plan has the “free” roaming package added and I will not incur any extra charges. However, I had a co-worker tell me today that you can roam “freely” so long as 50% of your overall minutes aren’t allocated to roaming calls. Once you pass that threshold you will be charged extra fees. Can anyone attest to this? I was going to call Sprint tonight but thought I’d ask here first. Thanks in advance.

I havn't heard about extra fees, but i have read that Sprint will have the option to cancel your service of your roaming is excessive.

Interesting. I figured they could do as they please at any moment without much excuse.

Here is the specific line:

"Sprint may terminate service if a majority of minutes in a given month are used while roaming."

Good stuff, thanks. From what I've read on other forums, those who have experienced Sprint dialogue because of massive roaming minutes have seen different results. Some claim they can use over 80% of their minutes roaming with no contact from Sprint while others claim to threats from Sprint for using around 50%. I'm going to go ahead and call and see what my contract states just to make sure I'm in the clear. Thanks again.

Here's an update on my saga.

Back in May I called and talked to a friendly lady at the Charlotte, NC call center. She said that I already had a plan that allowed me to roam at no additional charge. She went on further to say she'd note it in my account.

I recently got my bill and what is normally a $70 bill turned out to be a $202 surprise. I gave Sprint a call last night and after being on hold for roughly 30 minutes I talked to a lady in the Cleveland, OH call center. She said I was given wrong information and that my plan was not enabled for "free" roaming. She also said that in my area (Knoxville, TN) Sprint had no contract with other vendors so I could not opt for the $5 "attachment" to allow roaming at any time. She said my only option was to upgrade to a roaming account.

How can I upgrade to a roaming account if they don't have contracts that allow roaming? I was roaming just fine before with no problems. This seems odd.

Also, why can't 2 different call centers have the same information? It always seems that when I want to change something, everyone has a different answer.

At this point, I'll stick to Sprint only mode but that'll for sure cut out any calls from work.

I called them a little while ago in response to this thread. I confirmed that yes, roaming is free with the plan attached to both my phone and my wife's phone. I feel pretty stupid now since I have have been using Sprint Only mode for as long as I remember and don't know when I got free roaming. This comes in handy since most of the time I am in a Sprint coverage area (and prefer it) but now and then I go some place rural only reachable by Verizon towers. They did confirm the 50% limit indicating that if I go over 50% I will get charged for roaming. Its good to hear that it doesn't always happen though. It sounds like there is some leeway there in case I accidentally go over the limit.

I'm going to try going into the actual store and asking what's going on. It's either I upgrade to a roaming plan and get stuck with a 2 year agreement or move to Verizon. The latter sounds much more appealing to me.

I called back and got a hold of a guy who only claimed to be “CLC” in an unknown call center. He did not seem happy to be answering his phone today but I proceeded on with the call. I asked if I had the option of adding the $5/month attachment charge for the roaming feature and he said yes and asked if I’d like to add it. I said yes and he claimed all was complete and I was ready to go. That was about 30 minutes ago and it’s still not showing up under my plan details. Any ideas on when I can actually confirm it’s been added before using roaming? Thanks in advance.
