Default Sprint Q's on eBay

Can someone help this old man understand some of this stuff? Looking around on eBay at pricing for Sprint Q's .... came across the .99 cent deals (lotta strings attached) but the ones for the $350-$400 price range with this info have me confused.

"THIS PHONE IS UNLOCKED AND THE ESN IS CLEARED. NO SERVICE CONTRACT WITH SPRINT IS NEEDED!"

Can someone explain in detail what this means? If you buy one - then what? Can I assume you couldn't bring your current Sprint phone number over to it? Confused.

An unlocked phone simply means that it can be used with any service that offers the same service type that the phone supports such as GSM or CDMA. For example since both Verizon and Sprint offer the Q, the hardware is the same but since it is an "unlocked" phone you can have it use either service you choose. Companies "lock" phones that are to be used only for their service. Another example is the SIM card...a locked phone for T mobile will only take T-mobile SIM cards. An unlocked phone will take a SIM card from Cingular, T-Mobile, etc etc. Hope this helps...

clear esn just means that you can use the phone on your account when you get it. each phone is identified by an esn and when you want to switch phones on your account, you call sprint and give them the esn of the phone you want to activate, its called an esn swap. so clear esn just means it isnt stolen or anything like that and that its ready for you to call and switch it to your line. the no contract thing is true for any phone that you pay full (or near full price ) for. if youre an existing customer you can switch to the phone without having to sign another contract or anything like that. hope that helps

Basically that auction is for people who are already under contract with Sprint. You could buy this phone and activate it on your current Sprint account.

It DOES help ervman1. One more question. Would I be able to "swap" the phone number from my 700p? (only 6 months old). TRYING to become a Q family member <grin> without paying $450 for a new phone. About had it with Palm.

If you don't mind me asking .. how much did you pay for the Q? ..... and are you going to try and keep the phone number from the m1 over to the new Q?

Thanks for the info

Ok .. thanks all for the advice/info. Guess what I'll do is just call Sprint and make sure I can buy an unactivated Q, activate it, keep my phone number from the 700p and keep the exact same SERO plan I have now.
