Default Sending mail from SprintPCS servers

How to send mail from Sprint servers

If you are having trouble sending email from your Sprint Q, this is for you.

The long-winded technical explanation (skip to the instructions below if you don't care): When you set up a POP3 email account on the Q, one of the things you are asked for is an outgoing mail server. If you are using an email address that was provided to you by your ISP, you might find that the outgoing mail server for your particular ISP does not work on the Q.

Often times ISPs will restrict access to the outgoing mail server by allowing access only to devices with an IP address assigned by that particular ISP. So if were you try to send mail through the ISP's outgoing mail server using a device that is not on the ISP's network--your Q, for example--it will fail.

The workaround is to use Sprint's outgoing mail server for sending mail.

Instructions:

Before this will work, there are some steps that need to be performed from your PC.

On your PC

1) Go to the Sprint website and log in to your account using the Sign In window at the left. If you have not logged into your account online before, you will first need to register using the link provided.

2) On the account overview screen that has just appeared, find the section labeled My Online Tools on the right hand side of the window and click Sprint PCS Mail.

3) On the left hand side of the new window, find and click Settings and Preferences.

4) Along the top of this screen, find and click Setup.

5) Change your password, and remember it or write it down.
*Neat thing you can actually set this up so that when people receive replies from your sprintpcs account it can say whatever you want.. like Joeblow@bellsouth.net

6) On the left hand side of the screen, find and click My Personal Information near the bottom.

7) Scroll to the bottom of the page and find the Passwords section and click the Modify link for your Power Vision Username.

8) DO NOT actually change your Power Vision Username. If you do so, it will take several hours to propagate through Sprint's system. Just make a note of what it is (write it down), then click Cancel at the bottom.

On to the Q. If you are setting up a brand new POP3 account, the following instructions will be clear when you get to the outgoing mail server section. If you have already set up a POP3 account on the Q and need to change the outgoing mail server, open that account on your Q and click Menu -> Options -> Account Options, and click on the account you want to modify. Click Next three times to get to where the outgoing mail server settings are.

On the Q

1) For the Outgoing Server, enter smtp.sprintpcs.com

2) Check the box labeled Outgoing server requires authentication.

3) Click the link for Outgoing Server Settings.

4) Check the box labeled Use different user name for outgoing server.

5) For User name enter the Power Vision Username you found in step 8 on your PC. Do not enter the @sprintpcs.com part, just the username.

6) For Password enter the Sprint PCS Mail password that you created in step 5 on your PC.

7) Leave Domain blank, put a check in Save password, and click Done. Continue through the rest of the email setup and you are finished.
When sending email from an outside account through Sprint's smtp on your PCS Q, recipients using any version of Outlook will see for example:
"From: your_pcs_username@sprintpcs.com on behalf of youusername@bellsouth.net" - By: Syndil

I found this and tried it myself, and it works wonders for the sending problem for sprintpcs users. If you have any questions PM me, I'm pretty happy with the results.

Is all this pop3 madness necessary to send email from the SprintPCS website while browsing with the Q?

I was able to access my account on my PC but not on my phone... Weird...

Well a lot of us were having problems sending out our pop3 emails from our Q on the sprintpcs network. Thats when we figured out that this is the way to send them out correctly using sprintpcs mail outgoing server. For some people like me, its necessary for others not so much.

It sounds like that is because you have no messages in your pop3 inbox. Try sending a few test emails to your pop3 from another email and see if they show up on your Q when you tell it to send/receive...then reply back to the email on your Q and see if it gets to the destination. If everything goes without a hitch then you're set

I'm confused, if I log into www.sprintpcs.com with my phone number and password and send and recieve emails through the website is that pop3? I can;t even get that working, and I didn;t think I needed to set up a pop3 account for that...

pop3 is most commonly used as the format for isp email accounts or gmail, yahoo mail etc... it all depends what your mail server uses.

This is killing me . I followed these steps to a tee. I can still only send mail through my Outlook after I sync with my PC. I still can't get any alerts when I get mail.

Ok well I'm sorry it is not working for you, but I am living proof that it works. After numerous attempts to send/receive pop mail from my Q "as-is" I attempted this method. It works like a charm and I haven't had any issues since. I cannot express though how important it is to make sure you are using your carrier assigned email address and a password that you created. The login username and password for your carrier's website WILL NOT WORK. After going through all the steps myself I was then able to send/receive emails from both pop3 accounts and university issued gmail account. I wish you all well in getting this feature to work properly.
