In my past experiences (Worked at a RadioShack for almost 3 years) only one ESN can be tied to a phone number at one time. ESN swaps are immediate, and the old ESN's are released for immediate reactivation. So as long as you're able to use the Q with your phone number, your Katana is in the clear!
On a side note: I've done a lot of phone swaps, eBaying (buying/selling) and in-store activations. The only times (aside from shady illegal things such as ESN sticker swapping, etc.) where ESN problems come into play are:
1) Phones reported as stolen, b/c the ESN's get hot-listed
2) Phones that were not deactivated properly (only happens when people return phones and/or "terminate" (or so they thought...) their service)
2a) Phones that are still tied to accounts that have been suspended due to payment delinquency.
So I would not make it a habit NOT to disclose the ESN when listing your phone on eBay unless a serious buyer emails you for it.
