Everybody is going this route. Trying to hold on to customers. There are so many phone compnaies out there now, customers are goint towards companies that allow open development.

The interesting part of the article was not the use for 3rd party apps, everyone knows we can do that, it was the part about "wireless devices...not offered by the company."

Which leads me to believe that if a program causes your phone to flatline, it will still be covered under warranty, aside from registry hacks.

Thats what I think could be the biggest benefit from this.

I think most of you are misinterpreting this article (either that or I am).

What they are saying is that IF hardware meets their minimum requirements it will be activated on their network. Meaning if you have a certain phone, or other device that meets their spec, they will allow you to use it - even if it's not one they offer.

No where does it say they will support it if you have problems.

Someone had mentioned to me that there was a Federal law or FCC mandate which forces the telephone companies to accept compatible devices. I had not seen this mentioned anywhere else before. This may not be such a generous offer from Verizon, but something they are being forced to do. It will be interesting to see if the other companies follow suit with this offer.

I went back and re-read. I think it applies to both hardware and software.
What I was thinking was smartphones can run any software, whereas each carrier has their own apps and interface on standard phones like the razr.
I thought apps that we use would be available to those who own standard phones without having to use get it now, etc.
