Sync woes

Okay, so I've been searching high and low (even on here) and while I have found many suggestions, I can't seem to find a simple, cost effective (preferably free) way to accomplish what I'm trying to do. I already know that WM5 and AS4 will not allow me to choose only to sync certain categories, but I'd like to find some way to do this.

I've already tried a few different work arounds that I've seen suggested on various forums (including this one)... I've put items I don't want to sync over to my Q in a sub folder in Outlook, but that only provides one-way limitation, so everything I create on my Q still gets sync'd over (and I don't always want my peronal appointments getting sync'd to my Exchange calendar at work)...

I've also tried OggSync, which worked well, allowing me to sync only one category of items - tho in a round about way, having to first sync to Google from my desktop, then sync from Google to the handheld (or vice versa depending on where i created the item). But it had some issues with a couple of my recurring events that would get deleted from Outlook on each sync and, unfortunately, their support hasn't been able to assist yet. I was able to fix some just by deleting and recreating them, but on others, I'm not the organizer of that meeting and can't do that.

Next, I looked into commercial sync software such as IntelliSync or Chapura Professional, but these have WAY more features that I would ever use and while they're a great price for their features, I'd rather not pay $50-$60 for something I would only use maybe $5 worth of their features.

So, now that I'm done rambling has anyone figured out a way to sync only certain categories for calendar or contacts, or anything else w/o expensive software or have any other suggestions?
