Software update and console emulators.

I have heard that the old console emulators will not work if you flash udpate your software or get a phone with the new software. I am eligible to get a new free Q from verizon because mine is experiencing problems but I went into the store and put my storage card into their display model with the new software but my emulators wouldn't work (pocketnes, smartsnes and picodrive). I could have made a mistake and i didn't have much time to mess with things but I was just hoping someone out there would have some insight. I am running software version q2-bp_c_06.07.03p.
